The only exceptions include places of worship and other sacred sites. Face coverings will also be allowed if worn for health and safety reasons, because of the weather and in situations where it is considered a "local custom" to do so, such as at carnivals, according to the text of the proposal published by the Swiss federal government.
The referendum on Sunday was the culmination of several years of debates over the issue and comes 12 years after another referendum outlawed the construction of minarets in the country. Two Swiss cantons -- St Gallen and Ticino -- have already introduced a ban on full facial coverings in the past, according to the Federal Government's website. In several other cantons full facial covering is currently only banned at protests.
Bans, partials bans and local bans of face coverings are already in place in several European countries, including France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark. France was the first to ban burqas and niqabs in public spaces in 2011. The European Court of Human Rights upheld the ban in 2014. In 2018, the United Nations Human Rights Committee said the ban violates the human rights of Muslim women and risks "confining them to their homes."

Ridiculous.
The ban or the controversy?
It’s ridiculous that they’re banning face coverings? I read this as a response to Islamic head coverings, not masks for COVID. Why is this ridiculous?
Saw a woman in full beekeeper at my HEB grocery store in Houston yesterday. Really does not go with the whole Neanderthal Texas culture.
Ugly gots nowhere left to hide.
Muslims should stay in their s***holes and never go to civilized countries.
That’s an excellent idea I can get behind.
Multiculturalism is a complete failure, and will always be so.
Is this a "local custom"? Does he get a pass, too?
How about a simple law that says you have to remove your mask to prove identity when law enforcement asks?
Why these generalized laws that just encourage governments to overreach?
The Swiss believe in treating a cancerous disease very early when it raises its ugly head...
Would that the former U.S. had been so smart 20-years ago before thousands of new bomber-training centers (mosques) were built as the ragheads thumbed their nose at us after 9-11...
Ridiculous.

I have no problem with the ban and in fact, I consider it a right to be able to see people’s faces when they are in the public arena..... at least for people that I have to deal with. Not hiding one’s face is the first step of establishing the elements of trust in a civil society. There are exceptions to the rule... full faced motorcyclists, welders, hockey and football players, those dealing with extreme cold or other elements etc. but those are all regarded as temporary applications where the face covering is removed when the activity for their purpose is over. If I was asked to do a business deal of some sort with someone who insisted on a face covering .... no way.
Nope, that gives the terrorist moslems too much freedom. And they want to be Swiss? Then act like it. If you want to wear a face cover or a burka, go back to crapistan.
Why? Because it demonstrates to them that THEY have to live by our rules and that they can’t do their usual act of moving in and dictating social norms.
I don’t agree with the ban.
If these countries don’t want to let Muslims immigrate, then fine. But if they do, then the niqab and hijab are central features of female, Muslim dress.
One can get into the debate on whether the clothing is worn of one’s free will or not, but there are large numbers of Muslim women who are outspoken in wearing it. It’s basically a nun’s garment with the face covered.
The Swiss (like most Western countries) need to stop talking out of both sides of their face. If they don’t like Muslim culture, then limit immigration. But it makes no sense from a moral perspective to ban burqas yet allow women to walk around in a string bikini.
Like here in America they are allowed to blast that obnoxious call to prayer 5 times a day. Church bells are fine, foreign terrorist gibberish is not.
Sure is. I wish more people would realize that. If one wants to leave their home country for a better life, you leave that life behind and embrace the culture of where you’re going. That’s just my opinion though.
What is ridiculous about this ban?
Every civilized country should do the same thing.
Sure it does. One is our culture expressing freedom. The other is an enemy culture expressing slavery.
They need to conform to the west. The ban teaches them that THEY do not set the rules here.
