Scientists in Iceland have said there are now “strong signs” that a volcanic eruption may be under way following several days of near-constant seismic activity near Mount Keilir about 20 miles south of the capital, Reykjavik.
“We are not saying we have signs an eruption has begun,” Kristín Jónsdóttir of the Icelandic meteorological office told local media on Wednesday. “But this looks like the type of activity we expect in the run-up to an eruption.”
Víðir Reynisson of the island’s civil defence force told a mid-afternoon news conference it was “more likely than not” that an eruption – the first in the area since the 12th century – was about to begin, and could happen within the next few hours.
But Víðir said there was “no disaster going on and everyone can get on with their daily lives”. There was no immediate danger, he said, although people should avoid travelling to the area on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Mt. Tambora ejected immense amounts of volcanic ash into the upper atmosphere, where it was carried around the world by the jet stream. The volcanic dust covered Earth like a great cosmic umbrella, dimming the Sun’s effectiveness during the whole cold year. This resulted in a further reduction in solar irradiance, which brought record cold to much of the world during the following summer. Such an eruption would explain the appearance of the 1816 Sun as “in a cloud of smoke.”
To which must be added the speculation surrounding a complete eclipse of the Sun on May 26, 1816, and of the Moon on June 9 and the “greater number of conjunctions of the planets than usual,” which would favor, wrote Robert B. Thomas, editor of this Almanac, “old maids and bachelors.”
Yet if the gkaciers on Iceland melt a bit, the envioros will blame the gases from the local cows and not the heat from the activity at the core of the earth.

Sure, that's what they said about Biden getting into the White House. Now that's a disaster. If the volcano blows, that's Biden's fault. When it pollutes the atmosphere with toxic gases including CO2, will they then say climate change is man-made? Sure, if they continue saying it's man-made then it's happening under Biden's regime. His fault!
Maybe grounded flights wouldn’t be a big deal-it isn’t like Iceland is exactly a must-see tourist destination-but it probably would make the stuff locals ordered from Amazon and other suppliers arrive late...

The Mt. Tambora eruption led to severe famine in many countries. It’s estimated 300,000 people died of starvation in Ireland alone. Three of my ancestors died of starvation in 1817 (not in Ireland). Their white privilege did not help them much. There was hardship in the US too but I think few if any actual deaths by starvation.
