Well, yes, if you want to convict President Trump, such a witness would certainly be handy. But to date, there’s no evidence—not the merest hint of a hint—that such a witness exists. So how appropriate was it for Ginsberg to float such a notion?

Normally when you try to affix blame for an event such as this, you look to who stood to gain or benefit from the event. There is one person who in no way could have benefited and that is President Trump. He had nothing to gain and everything to lose.
There are two individuals who had a lot to gain and, indeed did gain. First of these was the Speaker of the House who had a diminished majority and needed to split the republican opposition as well as shore up her control of the caucus. She also had a strong desire to find an excuse to impeach the President a 2nd time. She achieved all of her goals with no cost to herself.
Second was the Senate Majority Leader who also had a diminished majority and the real possibility of losing his majority altogether. His control of the caucus was slipping with the public announcement by from 8 to 10 Senators that they were defying his leadership position and protesting the electoral vote count. He also achieved his objectives as the protest was shut down and any threat to his leadership position died. He was awarded by the new majority leader with a more favorable power sharing agreement.
We all lost by having another major scandal swept under the cloak of unifying the country and moving on. Just look at the shiny object (Trump) dangled before you and ignore the one pulling the string. Works every time.
