Sen. Ron Wyden: The Capitol riots prove we need to strengthen our democracy. That begins with voting rights.
NBC News / Comcast ^ | January 11, 2021 | Sen. Ron Wyden

Democrats must use our majorities to defend America from those who fueled and supported the riots. That means making it easier for every American to vote.

... I've been fighting for more than two years to pass universal vote-by-mail legislation in the Senate, where Republicans have blocked it again and again. That can't go on any longer. We saw unequivocally this time that voting by mail is secure, convenient and good for turnout. It's also among the best ways to combat racist disenfranchisement, because people opposed to your voting can't shut down your polling place if your polling place is your kitchen table.

Second, there is no longer any excuse for blocking statehood and full representation in Congress for the District of Columbia. Trump has proven in front of the whole nation that a president like him will not protect the nation's capital from violence, even if he is the only national representative they have the right to elect.

The same goes for the American citizens in Puerto Rico. If statehood is what they want, they should be able to make that choice. The way Trump and Republicans have treated Puerto Rico — particularly when its residents have suffered so much — is revolting.

Unless there's a grassroots mobilization, it will be a challenge to get significant Republican support for these proposals. But the alternative is to proceed further with a dangerous status quo — one that got us a tyrant in the White House, a violent attack on the Capitol and an attempt to overturn the will of millions of voters by violence and executive fiat. Our democracy is fragile. Democrats have an obligation to strengthen it.

Strange how Democrats can say something conservatives agree with yet mean the complete opposite.

But what they did in November was overplay their hand with this. Many people are now of the mind that the election was rigged with the help of mail in voting and that basically right then and there destroys any real credibility the Senator has with something like this.

I suspect the “grassroots mobilization” against Manchin, Tester, Sinema, Sherrod Brown and Casey will be far more effective.

The US Senate can pass all the vote by mail laws it wants. But the US Constitution states the election laws are reserved to the states.

What a farce: “ voting by mail is secure, convenient and good for turnout.”

Not going to stop fixing things until the “democrat” wins with 99.3% of the vote.

Puerto Rico should be given its independence and let everyone there go back to being good Spaniards.

They have nothing to do with the United States, and we don’t need a navy base in the Eastern Caribbean anymore.

Here’s a woman who acknowledges that what she is doing is illegal as she coerces THOUSANDS of elderly people to vote straight Democrat ballot.

Besides, it’s endorsed by unicorns, elves, and the dead! Clearly it’s the way to go.

From the article:
That begins with voting rights.

Absolutely false, but a subtle misdirection. "Oh look! Look over here!"

Strengthening our "democracy" begins with honest elections.

“That means making it easier for every American to vote.”

What he means by “make it easier” is that you don’t even have to vote, they’ll do it for you.

I thought they already did that.

I’m certain that election reform is coming under the guise of voter rights and/or strengthening democracy but will be loaded with provisions that do neither but will assure Democrat victories in as many jurisdictions as possible. Of course, the Democrats can be confident of bipartisan support with the Republican fool brigade of Romney, Collins, Murkowski, Sasse (one silent S) signing on to virtue signal.

Mail in voting is universally acknowledged by the ENTIRE WORLD to be insecure. Not even 3rd world banana republics use it.
