FDR's Address to Joint Session of Congress

TOPICS: Foreign Affairs; Government; Unclassified
KEYWORDS: congress; fdr; pearlharbor; wwii
On 12/8/41, President Roosevelt asked a joint session of Congress for a declaration of war against the Empire of Japan. Most of us have heard the short "Day of Infamy" speech hundreds of times.

This is the long version. CBS had a group of reporters in the press gallery, and all had some commentary or other. Older Freepers might remember some of the reporters.

Additionally, statements by representatives are heard.

Two things piqued my interest. First, the representatives were all full of fire, hootin' and hollerin' and ready to smash the Japs. Looking back, perhaps they shouldn't have been so gung-ho at that moment in time. Each one of them KNEW the sorry state of our military, and that it would take more than their hootin' the hollerin' to defeat Japan.

Also, listen carefully to some of the floor speeches. In 79 years, our speech patterns and regional accents have changed quite a bit.

This audio is and hour, nine minutes. I believe it's worth a listen.

Yesterday I was reading Don Stratton’s memoir, All the Gallant Men. He was a survivor of the Arizona. Died in recent years.

I believe I saw him interviewed on a History Channel documentary quite a while back. There were more living survivors in those days.
