A grand jury in Santa Clara, California, has issued an indictment accusing Apple’s chief security officer, Thomas Moyer, of offering bribes to secure concealed carry permits for Apple employees.

Moyer allegedly promised to donated 200 iPads worth $70,000 to the sheriff’s office in exchange for four concealed carry licenses “withheld from Apple employees,” according to a press release from the Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen.

“Tom Moyer is innocent of the charges filed against him. He did nothing wrong and has acted with the highest integrity throughout his career. We have no doubt he will be acquitted at trial,” Moyer’s lawyer Ed Swanson said in a statement.

The criminal charge needs to be against that sheriff's department as well as any other department that infringes on the right to keep and bear arms.

The Doctrine of Unclean Hands applies here as well; a party who has done anything unethical (charging for the right to keep and bear arms) cannot have the help of the court.

I do not live in California, but as I understand it, California is a ‘may issue’ state, the decision to issue or not rests with the county sheriff. If you live in a rural county, permits (good state-wide) aren’t that hard to get. If you live in the Bay area, you aren’t getting one unless you are really connected no matter how clean your record or how urgent your need. The donated iPads are simply a way of achieving ‘connectedness’.
