A man opened fire Friday on a prankster who fired paintballs at him after mistaking the paintball gun for a real gun, according to police in Michigan City.
Authorities said the 40-year-old man was pumping gas at a BP gas station when he began to hear popping sounds and felt stings on his body.
The (man) then saw someone out of the passenger side widow of a passing vehicle with what appeared to be a gun, police said. The (man), thinking that he was being shot at by the passenger in this vehicle, drew his concealed firearm and fired several shots at the vehicle.
Officers responded to the gas station and determined that the man had been hit by several paintballs. He was not injured. Police said the man has a valid handgun license and fully cooperated with authorities.
Investigators learned a similar incident had been reported earlier Friday in which people were struck with paintballs a few blocks away from the gas station. No injuries were reported in that incident either, authorities said.
We would like to send a message to the community that this type of behavior can be extremely dangerous, police said Tuesday. Not only could an event like on Friday occur which could lead to someone getting seriously hurt or killed, but indiscriminately shooting paintballs at people and vehicles can lead to serious injuries and property damage.

Too bad they were not removed from gene pool.
Our gene pool needs a shock treatment.
‘..mistaking paintgun gun for real gun’? Ha-ha, look at that foolish gun owner who can't tell the difference during an attack.
Cheerleaders in the media encouraging such random attacks on citizens with this type of junk writing.
Dude obviously needs more time on the range and some practice under stress if he wasn’t able to hit his target at short range.
Brought a knife to gunfight. Tsk, tsk.
Reminds me of an instance from my youth in Chicago. A friend was being a smart ass and yelling idiotic racist comments to people on the street. It was all fun and games until one guy pulled a gun and put a few rounds through the front window of his car - well, actually it was his mothers car ;-)
That was a nice one for him explaining that to his parents.
Ouch!. . That’s gonna leave a mark
Someone needs to explain the felony murder rule to these chaps. The drive by assault was likely a low grade felony meaning that if the victim kills a bystander the young lads get a long prison stretch.
Prescription for a mag-dump.
Under fire and at a moving vehicle?
Probably seeking cover in the process as well.
Most of the commentators have never had any sort of incoming, moving target or duress applied to their shoooting training so they are sophomoric in criticism.
One ought to take a friend to the range, and try to replicate such situation while the friend fires paint balls at him from the flank and the target is moving across the range at 25-30 mph. Seeking cover while assessing, deciding and attempting to engage....
Let us know.
Do not bring a paint ball weapon to a gun fight.
