Rogers Co. (OK) Democrats push to make area purple, data shows more republican turnout

Imagine trying to get elected as a Democrat in a predominantly conservative town. That’s happening in Rogers County with those running for office hoping to turn their district purple...

Young is running for State House District 23. She’s also the Democratic party chair in Rogers County, a group now working out of their new office in the heart of Main Street.

"Rogers County was, the whole time I was growing up here for the last many years, it was Democratic and then it was slowly drifting towards being more Republican," Young said.

Despite the Rogers County Democrats' push, Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody says 4,400 new Republican voters have registered for this election in Rogers County since January, compared to the 1,100 new Democratic voters.

"I think we're going to have a lot more voters engaged this time and I'm excited that they're doing that," she said.

Plus, she says 722 of those new Republican voters switched from Democrat, only 160 switched to Democrat from Republican, meaning the county is only getting redder...

I feel sad for my daughters. They are liberals only because of their youth and inexperience even though they are smart, reasonable, and intelligent girls. They are too young to interpret the speeches and lies of politicians against a lifetime of experience and hard lessons. My daughters will be very sad on November 4th and I will be severely tested not to spike the ball and do the ‘end zone dance‘.

I love my girls but I will be less than charitable as I laugh in their faces and sing out loud and proud to them why they lost. And yes, I will do the end zone dance just like ai did in 2016.

Since when?

My sisters live in Owasso and Claremore.

I don’t remember any county ever being democrat in 40 years.

I keep asking my husband to bet $5 on a Trump landslide.

He won’t take it. He’s Canadian so he’s probably a liberal (we never talk politics, maybe because he knows that I’m conservative), and I think it’s because he knows Trump will win.

Here is a very fun Youtube of a Tulsa Newsman giving traffic advice after the 2016 dust had settled! I trusting that he can repeat this for this young woman as Tulsa is just in the next county.

Adding a little info for those people unfamiliar with Oklahoma or history. Rogers County is located in the Northeast corner of the state and is adjacent to Tulsa. The county was officially founded prior to statehood on January 26, 1907 and was originally named Cooweescoowee. However, residents protested the name and the county was renamed Rogers after Clement (Clem) Vann Rogers, a mixed heritage Cherokee rancher. Now THIS Mr Rogers was prominent in his county and region BUT it was his son that became really famous, Will Rogers, star of stage and screen, newspaper columnist and gentle humorist of the 1920s & 30s.

Interesting. I was guessing Rogers county was named after Will Rogers, but thanks to you I just now learned it was named after his father. I’ve been to the Will Rogers Museum in Claremore. He was quite a guy. Long ago, James Whitmore played Will Rogers in a one-man skit and was magnificent.

I don’t remember any county ever being democrat in 40 years.

The last Democrat to win the STATE was next-door Texas' favorite son, LBJ in 1964. Previously it was firmly GOP in Presidential Elections from TX-born, Kansas raised Ike to Nixon but was 'D' for FDR-Truman.

However, from my family history, I am told that when my father (Durant-born) brought his war-bride new YANKEE wife (Delaware), to Lawton, he advised her that registering as anything OTHER than 'D' would mean being unable to vote outside the General Elections! Oklahoma got its first GOP Governor, as a state, in the 1962 election and in the 14 elections since, the winners have been 7 and 7.

FYI: his mother, my g.mother, was chairwoman of "The United Daughters of the Confederacy" and I'm told that her opinion about Republicans of any stripe could blister paint at 30 paces. Oh to have been a fly on the wall when she got the letter from her son, at war in Europe, that he had become engaged to a YANKEE. Can you say 'the vapors!' (smile!)
