COVID-19 diagnostic testing has been greatly scaled up from a few thousand tests per week back in early March to 2 million tests per week in early August. But the summer upsurge in COVID-19 diagnoses, hospitalizations, and deaths in the U.S. highlights the fact that we still don't have enough testing to provide individual Americans and health care professionals with the information needed to squelch the pandemic.
A huge part of the problem is that most asymptomatic, presymptomatic, and mildly afflicted people don't know they're infected, even as they spread the virus to others while working, shopping, and gathering in enclosed spaces such as bars and restaurants. Making cheap, fast tests available for use at workplaces, schools, and homes could solve this information deficit problem. "The way forward is not a perfect test," Harvard medical professor Ashish Jha argued in Time, "but one offering rapid results."
The good news is that a number of companies, including biotech startup E25Bio, diagnostics maker OraSure, and the 3M Co., are working on and could quickly deploy rapid at-home COVID-19 diagnostic tests. These antigen tests work by detecting, within minutes, the presence of coronavirus proteins using specific antibodies embedded on a paper test strip coated with nasal swab samples or saliva. Somewhat like at-home pregnancy tests, the antigen tests change color or reveal lines if COVID-19 proteins are recognized.
But there is one major problem. "Everyone says, 'Why aren't you doing this already?' My answer is, 'It is illegal to do this right now,'" Harvard epidemiologist Michael Mina told The Harvard Gazette in August. "Until the regulatory landscape changes, those companies have no reason to bring a product to market."

Do they pick out the difference between live & dead virus?
There should also be a widely available anti-body test to see if you’ve had it without knowing.
I will say the term “illegal” isn’t really accurate. It’s not approved. Very different from being “illegal”.
It shouldn’t be hard to get tests like this approved. Of course if they don’t work well, they won’t get approved.
Pretty sure this was debunked long ago.
No new “normal” thank you.
Judging by the blatant fear-mongering about an essentially perfectly safe hydroxychloriqine regimen, a protocol which is the best path to a new normal is that last thing that Democrats actually want.
There are different laws for every state. for instance, in Massachusetts one can’t order their own blood test without a doctors OK. In some other states you can.
The last part, you become a vector because of this test -- not saying it couldn't happen anyway without the test, but previewing the theory of the case -- that may not even be insurable as a product right now.
“A huge part of the problem is that most asymptomatic, presymptomatic, and mildly afflicted people don’t know they’re infected, even as they spread the virus to others while working, shopping, and gathering in enclosed spaces such as bars and restaurants.”
Here is one of the seeds of the intentionally induced panic to control the masses. How is this any different from the seasonal flu, colds. etc.?
Imagine a virus so deadly.... You had to be tested to know you had it
The best path to a new normal is to just stop the nonsense panic over NOTHING.
It’s a bad flu. That is all. Get over it. Our ancestors are spinning in their graves watching the old and infirm hold the young hostage because of their pathetic fear.
If you look at the statistics that the CDC has presented, and understand their meaning, you will understand that testing for this virus is pointless, much like masks are pointless.
Everyone is going to get this at some point. 220k dead in less than a year? Vastly more virulent than influenza. Also, even in the aged, much less deadly than influenza. The number of deaths is because its more contagious, not because its more deadly.
I for one will not subject my family or myself to a vaccine that hasn’t been tested for 10 years. Someone else can be the guinea pig.
Nor will I sweat getting the virus. I’ll get it. I’ll survive just like 99.7+% of all the others who get it. So will my wife and kids. It will suck, but so does a cold, sinus infection, and the flu. We get those pretty regularly in life and we always get through it. The keys to these illnesses are to drink fluids, take fever reducers (tylenol) when you get to 101-102 or above, and get food and sleep to maintain your energy.
Home test for covid using the wine tasting and smell method.

LOL! Well done.
Laws that prevent people for using simple at home medical tests is a crime against humanity. if they test positive they can always go to a doctor for a second opinion.
Its illegal because the State needs to control and have those positive numbers
in order to control the masses, (except for "Fredo").
Being related to the head dick-tater has it's blessings.
San Diego based Sorrento Theurapeutics (SRNE) has a product called COVI-TRACE (Diagnostic Test for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Virus in Saliva). Sorrento has a licensing agreement with Columbia University for the rights to a rapid test that detects SARS-CoV-2 virus in as little as 30 minutes. Projected cost for the testing kit is $10-$15.
COVI-TRACE is currently awaiting FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EAU).

Allowing people to use these cheap, fast tests at home will not be the magic bullet that someone might think. For an asymptomatic person (such as a college student, a high school athlete, or perhaps a blue-collar worker), a positive test means 2 weeks of quarantine. A real drag that takes them out of the social scene, their sport, or keeps them from being paid.
There are some people that don't want to report a positive test, especially if they're asymptomatic.
Bttt
The most fearful people I know are the young
