This was the big obstacle, that Senator Menendez (D, NJ) threw in the way of an Israeli peace deal with the new Government of Sudan (which has their former islamist dictator Bashir in jail, facing a possible death sentence).
To be fair to the Senator, it is a serious issue, beyond the likely election season desire to deny Trump (and Israel) a win before the election.
With this debt of the old regime cleared, an Israeli/Sudanese peace deal could be back on the fast track.
They’re way too late to deny Trump a win, several wins back.
I was hoping for a Grand Saudi announcement of a peace deal with Israel before the election - High production value ceremonies and sword dancing in gleaming palaces...
Oh well, Dubai is where the business is anyway.
I would not be surprised if the Saudis are paying this bill for Sudan, behind the scenes though.
It will still be sweet to have another deal in the home stretch of the election.
I don’t know much about sudan. Of course that amount is a joke over here for our government to give out. But I wonder how substantial it is to them.
The former Government in Sudan was led by an islamist dictator (Bashir) who supported terrorists, and even hosted Osama bin Laden for years.
After many years of the Bashir Government leading brutal jihad against the animists and Christians in the South, South Sudan seceded and became an independent country - taking 80% of the oil with them.
The economy in Sudan then collapsed (which led to the overthrow of the dictator). The new Government desperately needs some economic development and diversification.
They have Red Sea coastline (right across from Mecca) astride the Global trade route through the Suez Canal, and a huge amount of land (just the Darfur region alone, which was famous for the old regime’s massacres, is bigger than France).
They could potentially be integrated into supply chains in the region, for any operations of Israeli/Egyptian/Saudi joint ventures. They have land and labor at rock bottom prices, minerals, and could be a conduit for trade with the heart of Africa - even to Nigeria on the West Coast (the most populous country in Africa), through (Chad (also rumored to be considering and Israeli peace deal).
It could be a Grand Deal.

For comparison when the supreme court pass the Gay Marriage crap, immediately the same night the White House was light with the rainbow colors and there was wild parties there, the likes has never seen before!
