When Scotland voted to remain in the United Kingdom in the 2014 referendum, Valentina Servera Clavell was 14 and living in Barcelona amid a burgeoning movement for Catalan independence. We were looking to Scotland for an example that we could use to justify asking for our own referendum, she said. When the results came in, we were deeply sad because [the pro-independence side] were not only fighting for Scotland but for all the other independence movements across the world.
Now 21 and a student at Glasgow Caledonian University, Servera Clavell is hoping to be selected as the SNP candidate for the citys Shettleston constituency in next years Scottish parliament elections. Her candidacy comes as new polling shows huge support for independence among young voters, with 79% of 16- to 24-year-olds and 68% of 25- to 34-year-olds saying they would support leaving the union. Overall, the Ipsos Mori poll suggested 58% of voters in Scotland now backed independence.
These are going to be the elections of independence, she said of the 2021 contest. There were people who were undecided in 2014, or who voted for a stable union in the UK. Brexit and Covid-19 and the disaster of Boris Johnsons administration have made people realise they cant offer Scotland anything.
For Struan Mackie, 27, a Conservative councillor in the Highlands, the arguments of 2014 still stand. We have a shared history, culture and identity that needs to come to the fore, he said. Young people will not forgive us for taking our eye off the ball on the issues that matter to them because of a fixation on the constitution and dividing our country further.

Problem. Independence of Scotland is used to forward the cause of Socialism.
No thank you to a Commie Scotland.Sean Connery or not.
Most Scots want a very socialist Scotland. Best for England to break the union and let the scots go their own way
Scotland wants back into the EU, it wouldn’t be independent at all.
A commie Scotland would mean a conservative rest of Britain. Also, a commie Scotland circling the drain, as it inevitably will, would serve as a valuable object lesson of what happens to an economy when hard core leftists take over.
Why does it always seem the case that the biggest loudmouths yelling for “freedom” and “justice” wind up being the worst commies and tyrants there is?
Ask the Englishman on the street what they think. They’ll tell ya, “If Scotland is so bloody great what are they all doing down here?”
The average Scot gets £2400 more in benefits yearly than the average Englishman.
England should cut Scotland loose, close all its military installations, stop all benefits to the Scots, pull all Crown services out of Scotland and let them run bzck to the EU, if they’d have ‘em - which is doubtful as they’re a net debit.
In quite a hurry, aren’t they?
The UK hasn’t even finished Brexiting yet.
Q for these Scots: Why not wait to see how the UK does after Brexiting?
But then, if the UK does marvelously well, Scots might not be so keen to leave, eh?
“...a valuable object lesson of what happens to an economy when hard core leftists take over.”
How many lessons do people need? There are enough examples out there now.
“History repeats itself because human nature never changes.”
So let the Scots go down the tubes. All those western millenials will have a front row seat to see what really happens when their ideals are put into practice.
