The United States is buying more small arms than most armies possess, every month.

Went by Academy sports yesterday. Only had shotguns and shotgun ammo available. Some pistols but not many.

Consider heavy waterfowl loads for 20 gauge.

#2, BB, T-shot.

I see #2 Heavy-Bismuth 3" 20 gauge for sale at $36

That is $36 for a box of 25 #2 Hevi-Busmuth.

About the cost of buckshot loads.

I was in the Sevierville TN branch of Bud’s Gun Shop last week where the counter was 3-deep (socially-distanced, of course) in customers buying guns. I didn’t check out their selection beyond a glance as I was from out of state & not looking to buy a firearm anyway. Across the street from Bud’s is is Smoky Mountain Knife Works which was also very busy in the gun department.

.....here in the Central Texas are, the sellers of pistol ammo that I am aware of are limiting sales to ONE box of ammo in ONE caliber to ONE person a day....and the most common calibers are getting quite expensive...

Part of your problem is you’re searching for 16 gauge 00 buck which is not the most popular gauge for home defense. I have a 20 gauge home defense gun for my wife and the best I can find was #2 buck which I found on the internet. You might find 00 for your 16 gauge but may have to settle for a smaller shot.

Have you looked at Bud's Gunshop (online)? They appear to have Federal 16 gauge buckshot, but you'll have to join their "team" to be able to add it to your checkout cart. Team membership runs about $30 annually, IIRC - but you do get some perks.

Also, there's this:

https://gumgullyprovision.com/product/16-gauge-00-buckshot/

Don't know much about the vendor, though. That's almost double the advertised price at Bud's, though.

Of course more small arms are being purchased. There are record deer populations in each state with some of the hugest racks on bucks imaginable. The hunting spirit is up everywhere and we all want that big buck.

What other explanation could there possibly be?

But no ammo. I was a Sportsman’s Warehouse yesterday and the place was completely stripped of ammo. Good thing I plan for such eventualities, but new gun buyers are SOL.

The fact that 20 ga is currently more popular than 16 ga was something of shock. I purchased an Ithaca model 37 Featherlight 16 ga pump back in about 1972 or so. At the time, 16 ga was more popular than 20 ga

It was a Dove gun. Very light but effective for wing shooting. I also have a 12 ga High Standard duck gun but it is heavy but has much greater range.

I found recently that the Ithaca Featherlight pump is a favorite for military and cops in 12 ga. With a 20 inch barrel it is sold as a riot gun.

I cut down the 28” barrel to 20 “. It is great and suits me just fine for home defense. It’s what I have.

I have Freeper friends that would like me to get a pistol, 9mm or so. I resist because I feel that for me, a shotgun is better suited.

Since you have experience with a pump, it is less likely that you would short shuck the action, so a pump shotgun makes an excellent defensive weapon ... but it is ‘out there’ when shouldered for firing. We will presume you have a light attached and maybe a laser?
