Virginia passes legislation stopping police from making an array of traffic stops
Law Enforcement Today ^ | 10/05/20 | Chris Elliot

Recently, the State of Virginia has begun pushing forth new legislation which would prohibit officers from making what is termed as a pretextual stop. Pretextual stops are when an officer uses a mundane traffic violation to stop a vehicle because he or she believes there may be criminal activity afoot.

For instance, an officer may see a tag light out on a vehicle driven by a little old lady coming out of Walmart. That officer probably is not concerned that the woman driving is a criminal. However, spotting the tag light out on a vehicle that is coming out of a high crime area, the officer will make the stop to determine if criminal activity is afoot.

Now, the Virginia State lawmakers want to take that away from the police, in effect, killing a lot of proactive policing that keeps communities safe. Why? Because the idiot lawmakers in the state feel that police are using it in some manner to attack black people. Democratic State Senators Patrick Hope and Louise Lucas presented the bill. Hope said:

“A disproportionate number of people pulled over for minor traffic offenses tend to be people of color, this is a contributor to the higher incarceration rate among minorities.”

Now, a reasonable person would start to dig into the weeds on this claim, and see if the people who were stopped, regardless of race, actually committed criminal offenses, thus, ending up in jail. If blind to race, if the answer is yes, then the system works.

Using minor traffic violations to stop people the cops know are up to no good is part of good community policing. Cops know their beats, they know what to look for, and as long as the traffic violation is real and the arrest is legit, then what is the problem? Well, we know what the problem is, but we are not allowed to say it.

Why not just make it illegal to pull over a dark-skinned driver?

Dangerous criminals are caught all the time with an initial traffic stop.

Creeps with outstanding warrants are driving around the law-abiding, and getting them off the streets just became much more difficult.

Virginia has literally gone straight to hell with these democrats in charge.

They don’t catch the smart ones... Now they’re protecting the dumb ones too.

That seems to be the direction we are headed.

Depends on how they “know” the person is up to no good. Sometimes it’s good policing, sometimes it’s harassment.

Well, using the idea of busting out/shorting out a taillight to attract attention and be rescued if you’re a female who’s been abducted and thrown in the trunk of a car just went out the window!

I saw a lady in the store parking lot with a big BLM sticker on her car. I told her when she got out that she was gonna get pulled over because of her sticker. She was fuming, started to raise her voice about BLM and cops. I said “not that sticker. Your license plate is expired.”

Shouldn’t have told her.

As long as the reason for the traffic stop is legit, then it doesn’t matter. Besides, police are known to sometimes mess with “frequent law enforcement consumers” to remind them they are being watched.

But when it isn’t legit, that’s harassment. And ‘we’re watching you” is also harassment.

Adding on to your reality above:

Apparently our local cops get some magical realtime intel about some big time illegal drug transporting.

Magically the local cops know who to pull over for their suddenly broken taillight out of hundreds of vehicles on the road in that area.

Within minutes after the above pullover, a narc cop shows up with one or two drug sniffing dogs. The dogs go into happy prance as they can smell the large load of illegal drugs.

By then, the driver and any passengers are on their knees by the side of the road and assuming the position as a lot of stuff in plastic bags is being stacked up. The dogs are dividing their attention between the guys on their knees and the plastic bags.

Amazing how the above works.

Nobody goes to jail for a minor traffic offense. Tat means these yutes were caught with something bigger. It’s how many criminals are caught.

Already banned Exit purchase in every jurisdiction ruled over by the 9th circuit Court of Appeals. And has been for at least 15 year

It is still possible to do police work without a pretext stop, however....not just any turnip falling off a truck Can be a police officer.
