Coronavirus battle shows the bravery of President Trump: Devine
NY Post ^ | 10/4/20 | Miranda Devine

President Trump is not a basement guy.

Sure, he could have done a Joe Biden and hidden in the White House the last five months, a president under quarantine cowering from the Chinese virus.

The symbolism would have been disastrous for the mightiest nation on the planet. Trump had to show fearlessness in the face of the virus. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week called his refusal to kowtow to the coronavirus a “brazen invitation” to get sick.

But, as the president told his old friend Rudy Giuliani on Saturday afternoon, he took the risks he had to take, because “Great generals do not lead from behind. They get out front and motivate the troops.”

He was speaking to the former Big Apple mayor by phone from his hospital room at Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was flown by helicopter after his oxygen levels began to fall.

“I knew there was a risk that I could catch [the virus]. But if I couldn’t accept that risk, I should resign . . .

“I am the president of the United States. I can’t lock myself in a room . . . I had to confront it so the American people stopped being afraid of it so we could deal with it responsibly.

“I couldn’t hide in the White House . . .

“If I had handled it any other way, I would have created more panic, more fear in the American people . . .

When Pence is asked: “If the President is cannot even protect himself..” here is the response. Boom.

I love this article. Biden still hiding in his basement and how would THAT Presidency be? Same.

Biden is a coward.

Just imagine if Trump had pulled a Biden and hunkered down and refused to come out. The Media/Dem Party would have had a field day with the optics of that. They would have amped up their virus hysteria pointing to Trump’s hiding in the White House as what everyone should do. At the same time, they would have called him a coward for not coming out and trying to quell the panic that they themselves would have been hyping.

I have been around really sick people for many years now. Every day, “in their lives.”

I kind of smirk every time I hear someone called “brave” or “heroic” for dealing with a disease.

Yes...I understand how easy it is to roll over and do the “poor me’s” or simply give up. I have seen that too.

It is simply my experience that people who have something personal to live for will do what they are told. They will suck it up. They will stay focused. They “do the work.”

Its often not pretty. It certainly is not fun.

But it is not brave, nor is it heroic. It is more often an act of pure, unadulterated “selfishness” (in a very good way—”No one is ‘taking this’ from me”!). They are not doing it to save anyone, but themselves—for the benefit of being able to continue to live.

I know this is not a popular opinion, nor does it fit in with the “hero worship” we have for people healing from disease. This is particularly true during these “Cancer Awareness” months.

It is something that people “virtue signal” these days. It doesn’t mean I don’t love these folks. It doesn’t mean I wish them ill or think their work is not worthy of admiration. I think my steadfastness with being there, with them in their process proves those points wrong.

I find this statement from our President even more profound knowing that he is a germaphobe.

Anyone with a phobia knows how hard it is to “ignore” it. Takes guts and bravery.

I love this man. He doesn’t subscribe to the Roger Waters and Joe Biden view of generals:

Forward he cried from the rear,
And the front rank died,
The general sat and the lines on the map,
Moved from side to side

Not to case aspersions on Trump’s courage, but 99.4+% of people who get this virus do NOT die from it.

It’s great that President Trump wants to show everyone he is beating this thing. I don’t think it’s brave for him to ride in a closed vehicle with Secret Service agents. He was wearing a mask but unless it is an N-95 mask it is not preventing his exhaling of COVID virus in aerosols that an ordinary mask can’t filter. This puts those in the car at risk for contracting the virus.

Does this man not know the basics of this virus? Why does he want to subject others to it?

Pretty damn good analysis. We’ve been at each other’s throats previously, but this time you’ve knocked it out of the park. Many kudos to you.

It is a good article, but as someone who has also assisted sick people for many years I agree with you that people who are sick act in their own self interest to get better. So it depends on your own definition of the word bravery whether you consider that an accurate description. Challenges are what bring out the best in all of us however you want to define it.

An illuminating event for me was yesterday when President Trump took the trip around the block in a black SUV so he could show his appreciation to those who had gathered outside to wish him well. That unscheduled outing illustrated how grateful he truly is to those who support him.

Because if he was wearing a mask yet someone in the car gets sick it proves that masks are B.S.

He needs to start discrediting the medical bureaucrats who have seized our liberties.

Roger is a hopeless fool. Wrong about pretty much everything. Music and writing talent sure but that’s where it ends. The rest of the brain is pretty worthless.

Very true, Buckeye. IMHO, part of the adulation directed by our side toward Pres. Trump is because he’s not just the President, he’s also a symbol. It’s been so long since the American people have had a President who actually LEADS, that seeing him actually willing to take the chance and catch the virus knocks them off their feet.

Another IMHO: If he were even 10-15 years younger, I believe there would be a strong movement concerning repealing the 22nd Amendment.
