She may be trying to restore her reputation of independence among voters in Maine, who at the moment appear to favor her rival Sara Gideon for the Senate seat being decided in less than 7 weeks.Independence and moderation doesn't win elections. Sorry. Firm convictions and beliefs and strong support for them wins elections. She's going to lose unless she does something to help conservative Republicans support her, abstaining is a possibility as it is in effect a vote of support.

Independence and moderation doesn't win elections. Sorry. Firm convictions and beliefs and strong support for them wins elections. “Moderation” is the name of the game in the U.S. Senate. There aren’t even a half-dozen Senators with firm convictions and beliefs.
If they had firm convictions and beliefs they wouldn’t be sitting in a legislative body where they sell themselves out with boring regularity.
