NBC News via MSN ^ | Sept 17, 2020 | Pete Williams

In scathing remarks criticizing his own staff, Attorney General William Barr said Wednesday that the Justice Department has recently acted "more like a trade association for federal prosecutors than the administrator of a fair system of justice" and equated some prosecutors to preschoolers and "headhunters."

If my boss felt that way about me he would not bother going all the way out to Michigan to give a speech about it.

He’d just fire my ass.

Does he know he’s the AG? Or is the new theory that not only is the AG no longer needing to execute the presidents orders, but local US attorneys are also independent from him?

It’s fun watching the Twittering nabobs try to make a big deal about this. Barr is absolutely right.

That is how it should be, so it makes me wonder. Just how restricted is Barr from firing people? Is the bar set high? Does he have to build a case over time proving a pattern of insubordination or incompetence? Why should it be harder to fire a government employee than a private sector one? I know that one may say that there are “laws in place” to make it that way, but are “conservatives” in government protected by such laws? Would Obama be hamstrung by the inability to purge those who didn’t tow line?

I think that this may be the consequences of allowing Clinton to begin loading the DoJ, as well as every other agency, like the IRS, with his toadies, then the Bush doing NOTHING about it, and Obama was a death stroke for the integrity of the DoJ.

At this point, he probably realizes that those departments are absolutely filled with Obama's minions.

he said in a speech at Hillsdale College’s annual Constitution Day Celebration, which this year was held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia.

Hate to be picky, but he drove over to Virginia. Totally agree, start firing the leftists in that agency.

He is a scum-sucking NeverTrump Beltway Republican, but talk show host Hugh Hewitt is also a lawyer. He served as lead counsel to the Office of Personnel Management in the Reagan administration. He talked about that experience at length on his show once, and left you with the distinct impression that it is indeed pretty much impossible to fire a Federal employee.

a trade association for federal prosecutors

*************

I’m not a Barr fan but this remark was right on target.

Left unsaid however is that his department is clearly infested with partisan corruption. If Trump wins re-election I hope he corrects his last error of not cleaning house. It should be the very first act of his new term.

He should have made the trip to Hillsdale.

It’s hard to take a man seriously who complains like this about his own employees that he has the authority to fire.

Maybe he just hopes that, this being systemic, this will be a warning shot across the bow.

Exactly. What is this guy’s problem? Just get rid of everyone. Does he not know he has the power to do it? If he doesn’t, then he should be fired.

What a putz.

The fact is that Trump and Barr have the authority to fire every US Attorney in the federal government if they want to, but they have to take into account political considerations too, since they may need Congress to approve replacements.

The best way around this is to just fire everyone you want to fire on day one of the administration, because then it’s understood to be part of the transition and even if Congress gets upset, they generally let it slide. Trump missed the boat on that back in 2016, probably because he was listening to some GOPe advisors who told him not to rock the boat. He’ll have another opportunity in a few months; if he misses that, he has nobody to blame but himself.

Um, have you read Trump’s twitter feed of late?

Trump can fire political appointees with ease. Or not have hired them in the first place.

But Barr is a smooth criminal hack, talking a good game while doing exactly the opposite of good AGing.

If he can’t fire them them move them out of the way.
Make them Second Assistant Counsel for moose poaching cases in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Both Clinton and Obama did exactly as you suggest.
It should become SOP for all Republicans as well.
We need to quit playing by Marquis de Queensbury rules.
