The nineteenth named storm of the busy 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season developed off the southern Florida peninsula. The storm track forecast carries Sally across the southern FL peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico.

Yes. I have a SHTF Shelter in Place mentality, unless something is directly overhead. Plenty of armament, plenty of ammo. The wife is proficient enough to handle most of it. There's only one way in, one way out of the neighborhood. The county sheriff lives directly behind me. I think I have every emergency frequency in three zip codes programmed into my scanner, a FIPS/SAME code-enabled NOAA compliant weather radio, and a stout Uniden Washington 40 channel SSB with a Delta SPM1000W antenna tuner/SWR meter and mast antenna that'll throw out 25 watts LSB/USB. I've been a ham neophyte since I was 13, and given our current state off affairs, I think it wise to follow through this time, get my profciency up to at least a general broacast level (I used to have an FCC commercial license, so the technical end doesn't scare me), and add this multiband unit to my little radio shack cum rod and gun club here.

Sally’s update shows it’s track has shifted further east now - we’re dead center in the updated median. The AVNO 12/1200Z track has the center sitting literally on top of our roof Wednesday, but the 12/1800Z model has it doing a Crazy Ivan in the Montgomery/Birmingham area. Which puts us on the surly side of the circulation.

Hey, thanks. Two things are a bit daunting: One, I'm not sure how some of my archived courses will translate out into the current curriculum requirements. (I have sealed, notarized transcripts from two colleges; I even carry my alumni card from the latter, but that and $2.99 might get me an Egg McMuffin and small coffee if I invoke my seniors discount nowadays.) Academic guidelines change like the wind, and what was a valid course from five years ago might not meet the guidlines for the same course today. Some of my oldest date back to Carter Administration. (My mother labeled me a 'career college student'.) And I'm too old to not only rehash everything I was taught in high school and college again, but even back then the faculty tweed jacket types were a bunch of Woke Hippies. I'm at the age where I'd just break my walking stick over their noggin if one went off on a rant. Second, the per semester undergraduate hour tuition for online courses are an abomination. I'm no babe in the woods - tuition costs are second only to textbook costs on the collegiate scam list. (Don't get me started on that subject.) As previously stated, this would be an out-of-pocket venture for me, and I draw permanent disability. At the current tuition rates, I might finish a degree in, oh, say, 2063. LOLOL!

Losing power around here is a mess. The Internet went down all day Thursday, and I burned through a lot of my 3G data allotment on my phone. Then the power was out yesterday morning, and my wife went to the spare bedroom because I was using my phone for a flashlight an hour before she had to get up for work. I was wondering why she was in a mood when she got home. I think once the dust here settles and we get a general contractor in here to do things my legs won’t let me do anymore, I’m gonna see about financing a Generac. My stepson is a licensed electrician, so he’d know how to jumper into the main line without frying himself. (He did that once, and had to Medevaced to the burn center in Augusta. Spent a month getting skin grafts and treatment, then he and his wife at the time lived in our upstairs apartment for a year.)

Good on you going for an amateur radio license.

First of all read the federal rules and regulations concerning amateur (Ham) radio. Terminology is important. You may not like the restrictions we have to operate under.

“Broadcasting”, as you said you are going to do, is not permitted by Ham radio operators.

The Uniden “Washington” you talk about is a CB radio with upper and lower side bands on frequencies that does not require a license. I have had a CB Uniden “Grant” with the same features.

Ham radios operate on different frequency bands that do require a license.

Amateur Radio is not just a bigger CB channel 19 and Ham operators do not like that comparison. Being a CB “know it all” doesn’t go over well in ham radio.

Go to some of the Ham web sites and become more acquainted with the hobby and the general attitudes and interests of the operators..

ARRL is a private organization, advocating for the interests of amateur radio operators before the Federal Government which regulates and governs use of the radio frequencies assigned to amateur radio.

It is a good start for information but does not represent the entire amateur radio hobby. Many pros and cons about the true interest of ARRL. Some say that the organization only promotes changes in Fed regulations that will increase it’s paid membership, Excels in self promotion and sales of it’s many products.

BUT, It is the only organization that does represent the amateur radio hobby in Washington, D.C. and it takes money to do that.. Good luck getting your license.

Topsail - thx. I am fully aware of everything you posted. Perhaps my phraseology was muddled. I held a 3rd class commercial radiotelephone license from the FCC for quite a time, and did technical - and broadcast - functions part-time on an as-needed basis. My father was a career AM/FM PD and general manager, not to mention a talk radio host, long before talk radio was as common as water. I literally grew up in radio stations. (Well, in between girlfriends. LOL!) I was introduced to ham radio as a sideline interest back in middle school, and enjoyed watching ham operators as an observer. There were commonalities involved, which attracted me, but at the same time, I learned early on that there were two different sets of rules involved. Not the least of which was the conceptual matter of simplex vs. duplex types of radio communication. Sort of like the NFL vs. the CFL - similar game, different rules. By the time I'd done a stint in the army and went to college, my interests changed and it all faded from memory.

Until now. I'm almost 60, with a lot of issues that may strike me down to the wrong side of the grass, and I have my bucket list. This is on it. Let's just say it's one of those 'unfinished business' line items you want to scratch off before you're standing there at the gates, waiting to see if St. Peter has your name on his clipboard dinner invite list.
