Not sure that’s a good idea; too susceptible to hurricanes...

Didn’t a LOT of our drugs/med supplies/contact lenses, etc., used to be made in PR?

Actually, hurricanes are fairly rare here. We’re a small target in the middle of hurricane alley. We just got hit real bad in 2017.

Much of the hurricane damage was done to poorly constructed buildings. Building to withstand hurricanes is hardly more expensive than a typical tilt up concrete building.

I remember people telling me they blamed NAFTA for a lot of their economic problems, Mexico being a lot closer to mainland US than PR. Between that and the changes in tax laws, it was a double-whammy that had hurt them.

I don’t know if anything in the “revised” NAFTA will help the situation any.

A lot of pharmaceutical plants were in PR. Years ago the US, was trying to changed them from an agricultural based economy to a manufacturing based one. So they gave manufacturing companies a major tax break and big pharm jumped on bored. Their economy was pretty good because of it.

Clinton was the one who stopped it and China became number one producer. (there is/was a Clinton foundation located in Hong Kong. Ummmm...)

Thanks for the info. I admit I wasn’t paying that much attention to politics back at that time of my life, so I wasn’t aware of that. Definitely need to bring it back! I haven’t liked the idea of China making anything consumable since the pet food tainting issue in 2007.

And Mexico needs to stop making our hand sanitizer!

Yes, even an Australian company that my husband worked for had a pharmaceutical plant in PR that produced generic cytotoxin drugs for cancer treatment. There were many USA pharma companies with factories there. Clinton took away all the incentives for the companies to be in PR and they moved out.

My son who lives in PR with his wife and sons says there is a 5 mile by 5 mile industrial park where a lot of the pharmaceuticals were made. I wonder what condition they are in now. Surely some must be capable of rapid renovation/restoration. I will ask him the next time I phone.

China certainly has its share of bad earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding. Even now there have been fears that the 3 Gorges Dam might fail, flooding an area inhabited by 400,000,000 people. I read earlier that 90,000 people had to move so they could expand the flooded area behind the heavily impacted dam for the current flooding.
