California Doomed to Frequent Blackout Risk by Battery Shortage. The state’s electric grid operator said it needs to buy 12 gigawatts of battery storage. That’s a whole lot more than it has right now.

The article says that the batteries don't exist right now and would cost close to $19 billion if they did. They are needed because 9 gigawatts of natural gas generation, enough to power 6.8 million homes, has been retired in recent years.

Most of the nation is enjoying an energy glut (nat gas, etc.). All while we suffer shortages and high costs. Elections do have consequences.

It’s 12 bolts of lightening instead of just one.
How many times does lightening strike in one place? *thinks*

Battery shortage? 12 gigawatts? How many D cells is that?

Californians should be sending D cells to PG&E to help out.

California’s latest energy crisis has several causes. For one, 9 gigawatts of gas generation—enough to power 6.8 million homes—was retired in recent years.

These people are f***ing idiots. Gas is very cheap, its very energy dense and highly efficient. Its non-polluting and its easily transported. its also easily stored - in the ground. So of course, leftists hate it.

Moreover, the article only quotes large crony-capitalists who have positioned themselves to profit hugely from CA’s leftist/enviro political stupidity.

Wait, are they finally figuring out that, when it gets dark, the solar farms don’t generate electricity?

Leftists are funny

California needs batteries. They should just take the batteries from rich people’s cars. Then wire them together. Problem solved.

Why do I always have to think of everything?

The LEFT does not let reality get in the way of their marxist ideology.

I recommend Flinstone reruns to prepare for the New Green Deal

A few bullets would work faster, and be cheaper.

Hope Elon lets them rot, but as a good businessman he’ll probably make a bid.

The electric grid operator needs to hire an electrical engineer or even an electrician if they really said this. Battery capacity is measured in energy units - not power. Thus a battery will be rated in how many watt-hours of energy it can hold. Sometimes they will list amp-hours with an implied output voltage which you can multiply to get energy.

The only power consideration is in maximum power provided at any one time or over a limited duration to prevent overheating - but that is secondary to the storage amount. Talking about 12 gigawatts of battery storage makes as much sense as saying "the store is 20 miles per hour from here".

win win for musk. Sell them e-cars and grid batteries. The fidiots will drain the grid batteries charging the cars after they get off work all night when the grid batteries are needed the worst. Somebody was thinking ahead.

OK. I read the Bloomberg article and they snuck in "4-hour batteries", so by 12 gigawatts they really mean 48 gigawatt-hours, which matches their math to get $19 billion.
