Trump withholds praise for John Lewis, notes he 'didn't come to my inauguration'

President Trump, in a wide-ranging interview with "Axios on HBO" that aired Monday night, refused to praise late civil rights icon and Rep. John Lewis, citing Lewis' decision not to attend his inauguration and State of the Union speeches.

Interviewer Jonathan Swan repeatedly challenged Trump on topics ranging from the increasing number of coronavirus cases when he held his indoor and largely maskless rally in Tulsa, Okla., to Afghanistan to mail-in voting. Swan also asked Trump his opinion of Lewis.

"John Lewis is lying in state at the U.S. Capitol. How do you think history will remember John Lewis?" Swan asked Trump.

No social distancing for John but the rest of us can’t have a funeral for grandpa or have a church service.

Well, he was lying when he was alive in the House, too. So what’s your point?

Lewis hated Trump. He would not have wanted Trump at his funeral. Trump was respecting his wishes.

Lewis hated Trump even more after Trump opened up millions of job opportunities for Blacks, thus enabling them to enjoy the prosperity that this country is capable of. Trump’s action got them out of the plantation that democrats had been keeping them in.

Churchill once said "If Hitler invaded Hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons.” Swan teed up a softball question and Trump fouled it off his foot. How hard would it have been to say something like "John Lewis and I agreed on very few things but he fought hard for the black community and was a leader of the civil rights movement. Like him I have worked my whole administration to improve the African-American community which led the prison reform, lowest unemployement figures for blacks, blah, blah, blah?" Instead he complained that Lewis skipped his inauguration and refused to say anything positive about him. Trump hated Lewis and Lewis hated Trump, I get that. But this is politics and you try and look like the bigger man to score points. Trump couldn't do that.

For those who say Trump is looking forward to the debates, just remember that the debate will be filled with nothing but gotcha questions like this. All tailored for Trump to make himself look bad. And Trump will fall into the trap every time.

I don’t know Jon....did you ask him why he didn’t come to the inauguration and said I was an illegitimate President before he died?

I completely agree with you. That was an easy question but Trump can’t help himself. At least you know what he really thinks, so I guess that’s something.

That was my first thought also. It was an easy question to answer and rise above the fray.

Stop that. Don't be a liberal who spews intolerance. I don't have to agree with everything Trump says or does to like the guy and want him to win. Trump isn't perfect and if you think he is, you are lying.

That was an easy question and Trump could have done better.

The alternative would be a positive statement. That would get headlines that Trump supports the hardline racism of Rep Lewis

What you really mean is to take a cowards position like your own and submit

You would surrender to the lions on the arena floor and get eaten

My bigger question is why Trump even bothered to do an interview for “Axios on HBO.”

Because if Trump had done that, he would have been just another typical politician spouting meaningless platitudes.

The rest of us will take the genuine article, rough edges and all. Thank you very much.
