Houston we have a problem, and the use of the passive tense can't hide it.

The name was "was given by non-Inuit people and was said to mean 'eater of raw meat.'"

"Was given"? By whom?

Means 'eater of raw meat? in what language?

I don't know a single European language where "eater" or "raw meat" sounds anything like "esk" or "imo".

And why not? Because (depending on your source) the word Eskino is from the language of the Montagnais Native Americans of Canada or from the closely related language of the Algonquin Native Americans of Canada. In other words, it was a word used by one group of Native Americans to refer to another group of Native Americans.

https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=eskimo

So if the word "Eskimo" was invented by Native Americans ...

... and the word Eskimo is a derogatory racist word...

Then that means that Canadian Native Americans are ...

Move along. nothing to see here.

What will they call it? The Washington Redskins became the Washington Football Team. So will Eskimo Pie become the Chocolate Ice Cream Bar?

I’m an American. I haven’t purchased any Eskimo Pies in a long time, and now I will never purchase one (however they rename it) again. I will also try to avoid any other product produced by the same company. I am SO sick of corporate virtue signaling.

Eskimos are among the healthiest people on Earth thanks to their diet of mostly fatty fish and very little carbs.

They also built some awesome igloos that were snug and warm despite Arctic conditions outside.

I think Eskimos got it mostly right. We should emulate them.

Etymologically speaking, there exists a scientific consensus that the word Eskimo comes from the Innu-aimun (Montagnais) word ayas̆kimew meaning "a person who laces a snowshoe" and is related to "husky" (a breed of dog), and it does not have a pejorative meaning in origin...

I hope these companies that do this sort of thing lose a lot of money on this nonsense. They deserve to go out of business.

Most likely it was a Anglicization of an native word. Much like how aroughcoune is Algonquian, and racoon is the English version. Regardless even European last names often came from landmarks near where a family lived. The Italian name Bevilacqua means drink the water and probably came from people who lived near a well with sweet water.
