GOP Appears Ready to Cave on $600-a-Week Unemployment Benefit

Senate Republicans and Democratic leaders are huddled in the White House this weekend looking for a deal on a coronavirus relief package that can pass both the House and Senate as well as being signed by the president.

With the enhanced federal unemployment benefit of $600 a week expiring on Friday, the Republicans now appear willing to extend that benefit for the short term — several weeks at least. The Senate wants to bring an unemployment benefits bill to the floor as early as next week, but Democrats are balking. They want the whole $3 trillion package they passed in the House or nothing.

Democrats are calculating that Donald Trump is so desperate for a deal that he will eventually be forced to give in to Democratic demands and approve a sizable chunk of that $3 trillion. It includes increasing food stamp aid, monies for state and local governments with virtually no strings attached, and aid for beleaguered renters and homeowners on the verge of being evicted.

It will also include $1200 payments to individuals — another top Trump priority.

I’ll be against the enhanced unemployment and even eat a Shiite sandwich if the H1B and foreign worker ban was a real one. The same RINO Senators opposed any further stimulus were probably the same ones bitterly complaining to Trump about the Indian Jobs Express Ban. Anything to fsck over the American worker.

As it sits, companies just have to wait it out until January 1. Without such a ban, the chance of me getting gainful employment in my field sits between null and zero.

"Caving is what the GOP does best."

The GOP figures that they can be as bad as diseased excrement, but as long as they are better than the Demonicrats, patriotic voters will have to vote for them.

Another brick in the wall. The wall of a new permanent entitlement. Before long it will be “relied upon by so many for so long” that it would be, uh, racist to take it away.

Well, an entitlement for all except those of us who work for a living.

No matter how unpopular Dems are the GOP will always bend over backwards for them. I’d call them pathetic but the fact is that 99% of Republicans are just democrats anyway

Guaranteed income for adult. No work required, no citizenship or green card required. Only requirement is to vote Democrat at least once every election.

$600 per week, that’s $31K per year. The Democrats were looking for $50K, but that will be fixed next year.

If they rolled together the state benefits and federal benefits, it’d encourage more people to get back to work, because they wouldn’t be pulling down $768 a week for sitting on their ass lest they work two days and exhaust the $168 in state benefits and cut off the federal bonus.

It’s like a lot of things with a hard limit, earn a penny over the limit, everything gets cut off; that’s a recipe to keep people on benefits and not encourage them to work harder to get more.

It isn’t just the GOP caving. Trump wants the $600 per week extended, too. Many employers can’t get their front line, lower level workers to come back to work because they can make more with no risk by staying home. Next will be the demand for foreign workers because they can’t fill their jobs.

Democrats want the enhanced federal unemployment benefit of $600 because they know it will slow the incentive for anybody to get a job. The dems want to keep the unemployment rate as high as possible so they can continue using their talking point that Trump’s economy (unemployment rate) is the worst since the great depression.

The democrats know that the American people have very short term memories. A lot has happened since Trump’s 3% unemployment rate - it’s not even considered history. It’s forgotten.

Most Americans (except for those receiving it) did not like nor do they support now the enhanced federal unemployment benefit of $600.

Best thing that can happen is that Trump stand his ground on principle veto this.

Didn’t Carly Simon sing that song? It should be the GOP convention theme song.

Exactly! That’s happening now where I work. We’re very under staffed. One person doing the job of 5. Managers complain that nobody is applying. Not one person. They say “why would anybody willingly turn away $600 of doing nothing?”

Next will be the demand for foreign workers because they can’t fill their jobs.

What good is bringing manufacturing jobs back home if there is nobody willing to work?

The democrats know that the American people have very short term memories.

And that their base doesn't consider things too thoroughly. Next year is going to be very painful for many of the $600 per week collectors who are earning more than they did working. Unemployment is taxable income, and will also cut deeply into the Earned Income Tax Credit so many count on as an annual windfall. Lots of these folks will end up without much of a "refund" and may even have to scrounge up some cash to send to Uncle Sam.

Of course it will be Trump's fault if he's President. If he isn't, I suppose some sort of forgiveness will be passed.
