Bottom line: After weeks of violent rioting and nightly attacks, federal officers in Portland saw their first night of state and local law enforcement support and relative peace in the vicinity of the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse.
Following Wednesdays announcement of a cooperation agreement between DHS and Oregons governor, Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) stepped in to assist operations to protect the Hatfield Federal Courthouse. Crowds remained peaceful through the course of the evening; there were no reported actions, and thus no intervention by state or federal officers.
The past 24 hours: Thursday afternoon, per the terms of the cooperation agreement, Portland Police Bureau, Oregon State Police, and Multnomah County Sheriffs Department, cleared city parks in the vicinity of the federal courthouse. On previous nights, rioters had used the parks as staging grounds for criminal violence over the past several weeks. After the parks had been cleared, PPB reported conducting two arrests and finding several weapons including a sledgehammer.
At around 5:00 p.m. local time, Oregon State Police arrived at the federal incident command post; OSP officers were stationed inside the Hatfield Courthouse alongside DHS law enforcement teams.
OSP officers participated in daily operational briefings with federal law enforcement officers and later participated in joint patrols of the federal courthouse.
At 10:17 p.m. local time, approximately 300-400 people peacefully gathered in the area around the courthouse. By around 12:23 a.m. local time, the size of the crowd decreased to approximately 150-200 people. By around 1:00 a.m., it decreased to approximately 100 people and by 1:30 a.m. it dwindled to between 15-20 people.
Federal and state officers located inside the courthouse were not forced to leave the building during the course of the night a stark difference from previous nights and DHS officers made no arrests.
A person of interest wanted for suspected use of an explosive device during previous rioting turned himself in Thursday. The suspect was charged by the U.S. Department of Justices Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with creating a hazard.
Why is that courthouse still named after a Republican? Especially one who was drummed out of office for sexual harrassment?
Of course, instead of reporting that state and local law enforcement is finally stepping up to the plate and cooperating with Federal authorities, the fake news media will say that this kumbaya moment is brought to you by the Federal storm troopers leaving.
Yet the Portland Police responded to a nearby shooting where over 150 rounds were fired into multiple apartment buildings.
During the evening of July 31, 2020 hundreds of people came together in a mass gathering along Southwest 3rd Avenue between Southwest Madison Street and Southwest Salmon Street. People gave speeches outside the Justice Center starting at about 9:00 p.m. Vehicular traffic was blocked by people standing in the traffic lane Southwest 3rd Avenue. At about 10:30 p.m. the speeches ended and the majority of the people congregated outside the Mark O. Hatfield U. S. Federal Courthouse."
Through the rest of the night and into "the next morning the crowd was subdued. Some lit fires, climbed the fence outside the federal courthouse, threw objects and chanted. For the most part they stood crowded together on Southwest 3rd Avenue, between Southwest Madison and Southwest Salmon, talking in small groups."
"On August 1, 2020 at about 1:30 a.m. people started a bonfire in the middle of Southwest 3rd Avenue in front of the federal courthouse. People brought plywood and other flammable material to keep it going. Over the next hour the number of people dwindled to a few dozen."
"There was no police interaction with the crowd."
I don't know who this Portland guy was but he was probably some racist, sexist, homophobic, Bible thumpin' killer of Native Americans who wore a MAGA cap and listened to Rush Limbaugh all day anyway.
And then get back to is in 30 years and let us know how that all worked out for them.
No, that was Bob Packwood.
Ah, yes. Thank you. He was a Republican though, wasn’t the? That should be disqualifying enough.
You are correct as that is what the press will probably say, however I did notice one very important thing in the article. They say the Portland police and state police cleared the parks near the courthouse where the rioters have been camping out in staging. Once they no longer had the home-based work out of it seems much of the violence has gone away.
