Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday said he believed many of President Trump’s tweets have “coarsened discussion,” but praised the president for having “a backbone."
“So many of us are so sick and tired of Republicans that roll over and whimper when encountering the slightest resistance. And I think probably the best characteristic about the president is he’s got a backbone. And he will fight,” Cruz told conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt, when asked how the president has changed the Republican Party.
“Now I will say ... I wish his tone and some of the things he said were different,” Cruz added. “Many of the tweets I’m not a fan of, and I do think it has coarsened discussion. So that is a less-than-positive development.”

You are right, of course. The sad thing is that there’s so many people on Free Republic who absolutely hate Ted Cruz, and look for every reason to come out and damn him. Apparently it is no longer possible to have any negative critique about our current president, who is perhaps the best president we’ve had in my lifetime.
It really is too bad that so many people on Free Republic are not able to think very deeply. They think only in terms of perfect and demonic, and are triggered by anything that does not 100% align with their preconceptions.
They believe that President Trump is Jesus Christ the Messiah, flawless in character and speech, and anybody who might have a critique of any little thing he has ever said or done is necessarily a Never Trumper. These idiots, like the idiot started this thread, just cannot think with any kind of nuance.
I think President Trump has done amazing things over the past few years, and I fully support him. That said, nobody is perfect. I know I risk being demonized for saying so, but even though I affirm most everything President Trump says and does, he is not perfect. Nobody is.

You want to see "coarsened discussion" watch the video of the Barr hearings from the other day. I watched three hours of it, and it nauseated me. And I can tell you, the ignorance, vitriol, hatred, lies, and slander came 100% from the Left.
It was embarrassing and disheartening as an American to watch that pathetic display.

If Trump appears weak it is because he is. He is the first POTUS in American history without the support of the elected members his own party.

You are parroting Democrat talking points. Every politician has his fan club. Support for this POTUS is far more policy based than typical of GOP Presidents. None of us elected W. Bush to pass amnesty but we voted for him. We elected President Trump to build the wall and stop unfair trade with China. The personality stuff is secondary to policy.

No, I’m not. I’m thinking for myself, like most patriotic Christian conservatives I know.
I affirm the majority of what President Trump says and does ... however sometimes he says or does something that I find inelegant. That doesn’t make me a “Never” Trumper; it makes me a thoughtful citizen. One who will be voting for Trump in the next election.
Nobody is perfect. Reasonable people acknowledge that. Unreasonable cult members don’t.

You’re right. McCain was shocked to find himself on the slippery downslope of his political career and gaining speed toward the dustbin after that comment by Trump. Far from being ill-considered, it arguably ended up being one of those kill shots we’ve heard so much tell of.
