The NRA has a real opportunity here. There are literally millions of new first-time gun owners. If there is one thing the NRA does well, it is gun safety training.
They should launch a nationwide gun safety training program just for new gun owners. They could tap gun & sporting goods manufacturers, gun ranges and wealthy pro-gun folks to contribute to subsidize the cost. This would be great publicity for them while doing a genuine public service to the nation. Outreach to minorities, women, gays and the elderly as part of this would be helpful.

The NRA is in complete chaos. They can’t even get out of their own way. Maybe GOA or TSAF could do it.
Not a bad idea. Could make use of things like Youtube for non-range lessons.
This is a way for the NRA to redeem itself. An opportunity like this does not come around every day. I do not think other gun rights orgs have the organization or funding to pull this off.
I am an nra certified pistol instructor. The NRA offers a basic pistol class. However the instructor sets their own price except for the cost of the books. I charge $75 for the 7-8 hour class. I also have to rent range time which I pay out of the $75. I also do private lessons for those who can’t come to a class. So the NRA does offer a basic pistol class but the price is set by the instructor.
Yeah, those cheap guns are dangerous!
The NRA has one other thing that other gun orgs do not have; literally tens of thousands of instructors to draw on that the NRA has certified.

Lots of the “Instructors” Ive come across are petty tyrants with little d:ck syndrome instead of knowledgable teachers.
The concept is right, but the execution would be horrendous. Find a good gun shop and propose the idea. A good local shop could really make waves with some customer appreciation and marketing.
The classes even provide guidance on what kind of firearm to buy, and allow the participants the opportunity to try out various pistols.
As an example, the Pelham Fish and Game Club offers a variety of courses including the NRA Women on Target class, the NH Hunter Safety Class, and other classes suitable for beginners.

Lapierre has been worse than Moses was. It’s a shame what’s happened in the last 10-15 years. I got life in the early 2000s and then Patron level and quit. I still think they’re mostly good, but they have some serious problems too.
Why does the NRA have to redeem itself?
The NRA has been in absolute chaos, obsessed with a power struggle over who controls the org. Factions among board members have attacked each other with slanders, claims of misappropriation of funds, etc. Their reputation among gunowners has take a huge hit as a result of this.
Agreed. The NRA is a total basket case at this moment. Tom Gresham even publicly recommended Wayne resign over public airways but Wayne is determined to grip the saddle and ride the entire organization over the cliff.
I concur that the top end of the NRA is a mess.
I don’t see how a training program is going to fix that.
Nor would it redeem anything related.
The NRA is just a giant slush fund for a few top executives. It’s time we move on to organizations that do more to fight for our Second Amendment rights.

That is why the politicians took up the hue and cry against the “evil Saturday Night Special” back in the 1960s. Ban them and the “Evil” 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifle was the mantra back in the 1960s.
Any handgun under $50 in 1970 was considered a “Saturday Night Special”. The Denver Post, in 1970, illustrated an article on SNS firearms with a Ruger Mark II, which cost was $45 at that time.
Note: The call to ban army surplus rifles was actually an attempt by New England congressmen to protect Winchester, Remington and Savage from cheap competition, so they designated those rifles “Evil”. The JFK murder helped a lot.
Where I live, there is plenty of room to go shoot, and plenty of seasoned gun owners. As such, most new gun owners don’t feel the need to pay someone to teach them basic gun skills. Be that as it may, my wife and I are NRA certified, and she taught concealed carry for many years. We have 160 acres here, so she just did it on our place. I have my own 600 yard rifle range here, and I’ve been toying with the idea of giving courses to all those gazillion new AR15 owners on how to REALLY operate and shoot that rifle.
