Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday the city needs to balance peoples rights with safety the day after a Post reporter was bashed in the face with a 2-by-4 by an Occupy City Hall protester as cops did nothing.
We always want to figure out the best way to balance safety with the other rights that people have, Hizzoner told reporters addressing Sundays outrageous incident involving Post reporter Kevin Sheehan, who was covering a demonstration when he was attacked in front of do-nothing police.
Claiming that the ongoing protest outside City Hall has reduced in size quite a bit, the mayor added, We need to always balance first and foremost safety but of course, freedom of speech and the NYPD is determining the best way to do that.
I heard the report about the journalist, and if that journalist chooses to press charges, of course, everything will be investigated as any other potential crime, de Blasio said. But to the best of my understanding, he has not pressed charges to this moment.
Sheehan was using his cellphone to take footage of the demonstrators when he was assaulted around 11:35 a.m. as the crowd snickered.
The reporter, who was left with a swollen lip and headache, told eight nearby officers what happened.
One of them replied that if there were no physical marks left on him, Its not assault, its harassment.
Sheehan said that when he then tried to file a harassment complaint, he was essentially ignored.

Dear maroons. The virus is either a threat or it’s not. it doesn’t care one bit about Democrat public tantrums, it will infect who it pleases. So he’s saying that in order to protest it’s OK to be “a little pregnant.”
🍿
He wants them to safely go out rioting and looting and be safe about it? Or, does he want to ensure the safety of those rioters and looters somehow?
He means that demonstrating (including rioting) for BLM is OK, but demonstrating for opening businesses is not.
Sure, Bill....EF THE Taxpayers.
What a jagoff.
Sannity, common sense, from a Marxist? What a joke.
I see NYC and NYS being suited into oblivion in class action civil rights actions to begin with. The litigation will bankrupt the city and tie-up the courts for years.
Fredo and Big Bird, you didn’t think this through did you.
Was the 2x4 damaged?
At this point, who can blame the police for doing nothing? They’re in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t “ predicament. This is a portent of a SHTF world.
Murphy’s Law: The guy with the biggest gun makes the rules.
Every day, this jerk proves hes a simpleton. You have to wonder what this assholes response will be when a protester throws a brick at him and he ends up in a Covid hospital?
In New York City, The Post probably means the New York Post, one of the few papers that is usually on our side. It is outrageous that the rioters have a no-video
‘policy’. They are in public and have no right to stop having their actions on video. Then again, they have no right to vandalism or rioting or blocking highways either.
Sounds like the reporter was told to not bother and become an irritant. Since he has not filed a complaint, I wonder if his employer told him to drop it, as well.
