Roof destroyed at San Gabriel Mission after fire broke out at 249-year-old church

A fire broke out at the San Gabriel Mission and completely burned the church’s roof early Saturday, officials said.

Authorities have not said what may have caused the blaze at the 249-year-old church on 428 S. Mission Drive.

Video recorded before daylight shows dark smoke rising from the flames.

Officials did no report any injuries.

The church, founded in 1771, was the fourth of 21 missions established by the priest Junipero Serra, according to the Los Angeles Times.

My guess is it will be arson. The wannabe Chumash will celebrate the destruction of Fr Serra’s building, but they cannot take away the good he did, which was to convert the pagan indians to Christianity so that their souls would receive the sanctifying Grace Jesus Christ won for us on the Cross.

I remember as a kid seeing Indian skulls on exhibit with arrowheads embedded in them — the result of inter-tribal wars in California.

Serra’s work put an end to all that.

The Mission roofs are virtually fireproof. They are made of clay tiles. A mere firework is not going to get a tile roof burning or half of Los Angeles County would have burnt down on the Fourth of July.
