DETROIT – One of the great tragedies of COVID-19 is the disproportionate impact it’s had on the Black or African American community.
According to state officials, despite being only 14% of Michigan’s population, Black people make up 30% of all coronavirus cases and 40% of COVID-19 related deaths.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she believes those numbers are because of uneven health care delivery and signed an Executive Directive to develop rules to require implicit bias training for health professionals to address racial disparities.
The governor’s task force said people of color suffer in medical settings from the unconscious bias by medical professionals.
She turned to Dr. Randolph Rasch, Dean and Professor of the Michigan State University College of Nursing, who spoke extensively about what implicit bias is. Rasche said it’s an evolutionary human self-defense mechanism, but “because it is so frequently associated with race, it has the implications of thinking that we’re accusing someone of being racist. The key is that it is unconscious.”
Implicit biases also deals with weight, gender and even how attractive someone is.
He said implicit biases, in a medical setting in particular, leads to negative unconscious thought and lesser for some, and even no treatment for others.
Rasch and the task force believes that causes unnecessary deaths.
“It is especially important in how we gather a history, how we do physical exams, how we make decisions about the data and how we use that to work with patients to develop the best health care they need,” Rasch said.
The practical impact of Executive Directive 2020-7 means those looking to get a new license or wants to renew their medical license will have to undergo bias training.

It would be interesting to see some personal stats on the
folks who died. Was their weight a lot higher than the
other patients? Were they substance abuse people? Was
alcohol a factor?
I’m not trying to denigrate anyone, but it would be of
interest to me to know if poor personal choices were a
large factor in all this.
It would allow others to contemplate their own choices,
and make some improvements if that were the case.
Of course it would look like officials were being
insensitive if these factors did have a high impact
on mortality, and then made public.

Wife and I watched her “press conference”. Silly us - we thought it was supposed to be an update on where things were at with the virus in Michigan, not an hour long lecture on how we ALL (yes, all - every last one of us) have “implicit bias” - and THAT is why the virus has impacted the black community more. Because, you see, healthcare workers just automatically treat black people differently than white people - virtually all the time (supposedly).
Even worse, this “implicit bias” is generally not even something you KNOW you have. Because (get this)..it’s “subconscious”. So, don’t deny you have it - you do, and you just don’t know you do.
Even my normally calm, collected, level headed wife wasn’t able to believe what we were hearing. We were both absolutely beside ourselves.
What wasn’t mentioned (of course) are any of the LIKELY reasons blacks are getting hit harder by the virus. Many cases of lots of people living in a single household. Many reports of huge, block parties (yeah, none with masks). Other “co-morbidities”. Oh, but none of that is why. It’s because we all have “implicit bias”.
I have numerous people in my family in the healthcare field, and I can pretty much guarantee knowing them all the way I do that NONE of them have ever treated someone differently because the color of their skin.

These numbers are also driven by urbanization. Black Michiganers are generally packed into big cities, where the threat of infection is worse.

Frau Gretchen is late to the game. Daughter just finished up a nurse practitioner continuing education conference. Bias and sensitivity training was interwoven into the curriculum.
