Anyone hoping to see the Notre Dame's fire-wrecked spire rise from the ashes as a gleaming, ultra-modern version of its former self may be set for disappointment.
France's new culture minister Roselyne Bachelot has weighed into one of the country's most contentious national debates by declaring that Notre Dame should be rebuilt to look "identical" to how it did before last year's blaze.
Speaking on French radio Thursday morning, just days after assuming her government post, Bachelot said that there was "broad consensus" that the cathedral's roof and spire should not undergo a contemporary redesign. "A broad consensus is emerging in public opinion in favor of an identical reconstruction," she said during an interview on national radio broadcaster France Inter. "It's hard to say it'll be 'exactly the same,' but the spirit of the spire will remain."
She went on to say that it is, ultimately, "the President (Emmanuel Macron) who will decide." Architect unveils striking proposal for 'green' Notre Dame
Bachelot's comments signal a significant shift in position for an administration that once appeared willing to consider alternative designs. Last year, France's Prime Minister Edouard Philippe -- who last week stepped down for unrelated reasons -- announced an international competition to reimagine the damaged structure's roof and spire.

Smart decision, only took 15 months.
GOOD!!!
Last I checked they were still pretending they didn't know.
If they do decide to redesign it as some monstrosity, well, the good news is, the spire burned once, it could burn again :)
Don’t think so. They say electrical or a cigarette.
Why was this even debated?
A month or so back, a Muslim terrorist was arrested in France for some typical Muslim activity. I noted that he had an office right across from Notre Dame.
What a coincidence.
I’m fine with that.
“She went on to say that it is, ultimately, “the President (Emmanuel Macron) who will decide.”
Why would Macron get to ‘decide’.
I have done some serious mortise and tenon. Never knew a suit could carry such weight. I have built things since I was a youngster. Hobby mostly.
Of course, a goof in a suit wants to tell you how, where and when....
At a time when many great symbols of the west are being trashed and removed, we ought to be grateful that at least in this case, sanity appears to be prevailing.
It won’t be the same unless it is built with the same love and devotion and faith as the original.
Having a large percentage of the work force be islamists doesn’t fit the bill.
Even France drew a line in the sand over their cultural monuments. Not the USA though. France did.
It doesn’t take much to ignite wood that’s been seasoned for 800 years.
“Why would Macron get to decide”
Because the French president is as near as you can come to a term-limited, elected King. The national assembly does not have much authority.
Or so I’ve been told.
Some muslim
That is sad, considering they gifted the U.S.A. The Statue of Liberty.
“Some people did something”
