More drugmakers recall metformin products after finding they contain carcinogen

Two more drugmakers have recalled their metformin products following an FDA warning that it found unacceptable levels of a carcinogen in the drugs.

Lupin Pharmaceuticals, based in Mumbai, India, is recalling all lots of its metformin extended-release tablets after finding certain batches were above the acceptable daily intake level for N-Nitrosodimethylamine, NDMA, a carcinogen.

Metformin is the generic name for a type of drug that is used to improve blood glucose control in adults with Type 2 diabetes.

Granules Pharmaceuticals, based in Hyderabad, India, is recalling 12 lots of its metformin tablets for the same reason.

Neither drugmaker said they had received adverse event reports related to the recall.

The FDA said in late May that it had found unacceptable levels of NDMA in metformin. The impurity was originally found by online pharmacy Valisure in early March.

Five other drugmakers recalled their metformin products in June after the agency's announcement.

Whew! I lost over 80 pounds over the past year and was able to get off metformin (and the other medicine for high blood sugar too).

Well, great. One more drug I’ve taken daily for years that is now on its way out. I can’t take Zantac anymore. I was switched off a cholesterol drug because it had some cancer scare.

At this pace, hydroxychloraquine will be next. If it’s cheap and it works, they want it off the market.

Metformin? What to do? Doctor placed a person I know on 500 MG of metformin and has been on it for about a week. Now the doc. wants to increase the daily dosage to 1000 MG. Are their different drug manufactures producing this product or basically one company?

Type 2 for over 14 years. Been taking the max (2000mg) metformin for maybe the last ten years. HHmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Do a search on metformin dementia. Also take glipizde. Did not want to pay the $200, $300 or $400 a month for the exotic stuff.

And all those ads that kinda say you can get rid of type 2 by snapping fingers. :<(((((((((((

Two years ago this was the same carcinogen found in Valsartan from both India and China.

I think there are multiple companies....docs usually start on a low dose and then increase it....don’t be surprised if the drug dose is upped again to 1000mg twice daily, extended release.

Good call. It’s a reason to check the source for my Kaiser-Permanente’s supply.

I take Glyburide/Metformin (mfg Citron).

$20.00 90 day supply (180) with GoodRX discount coupon.

I couldn’t keep taking Metformin as I was living in the bathroom. Glyburide/Metformin is much more tolerable.
