Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has instructed the Houston First Corporation to cancel the Texas Republican Party's convention slated to be held in person in Houston next week, the mayor announced on Twitter and in an afternoon press conference.

Asked why he waited so long to request the event be cancelled, Turner said he hoped the Republican Party would call off the convention first.

I’m sure the hospitality industry in Houston is so grateful that they don’t have to sell rooms and dinners to those rascally republicans. I mean with all the bookings they have for the Rockets and Astros where would they put them?

Flying USAF aircraft back and forth a bit in the desert SW, I always think of Midland bc it has a huge and excellent airport kind of in the middle of nowhere. Refueled a fair number of times.

I’ve always wondered why such a giant facility was there.

I assume it is a former military field.

Anyway, I would presume with that kind of base there is a ton of traffic and hotels and whatnot.

Ha. Do it in Denton County at Texas Womens college (does that still exist?) or at Mean Joe Green stadium. I’m sure that will trigger all kinds. Denton county is the largest county to refuse to enforce the soon to be former governor abbots mask edict.

Move it to Lubbock, or Abilene, or Tyler.

“ Mean Joe Green stadium”
Hell no, UNT is a liberal hell hole university. Don’t waste your money or your kids on that crapola “university”.

Go have it in Midland or somewhere consistently Republican.

I don't know if Midland is Republican, but it looked like a dump when I was trying to find a place for my daughter and me to stay when driving at night.

On the other hand, what idiot thought that having any sort of event in Houston was a good idea? Especially in July (or August).

And especially a supposedly conservative event, In Sheila Jackson Lee land.

I've of mixed opinion on this.

On the one hand, I'm a local and would like to see a convention happen in Houston.

On the other hand, I do understand that holding the convention obligates people to have to work the facility, and they may not want to. That means concessions, operations, security, custodial, etc.

Many of those workers are private, but some are city workers. So, it's a tough call.

Denton county does not have a mask order, but the city of Denton recently enacted one.

Did the Texas Democratic Convention go forward as a live event and I didn’t hear about it? If it wasn’t the Texas Convention, which Democratic State Convention went ahead and a live event? I don’t remember any, but I’m sure you have the info at your fingertips, and I would appreciate your sharing.

The thing you guys have to understand is that the pressure on politicians to prevent EVEN ONE CASE is tremendous.

I work on COVID, I’ve done nothing else since March. I am in a public health adjacent field but I’m not a State employee.

The messages that the governors are getting are 90-10 pro severe restrictions. This is beyond question.

Whether or not they are wise to respond to this, and whether or not they even are aware that preventing most of these infections through public action is impossible, I can’t say.

But the People are getting what they want, and as far as I can tell, they want more of it.

Where was that pressure in 2009, when Obama was in the White House?

From your FR profile:
The ruling coalition is united around several things that the people are against. They are skilled at setting up phony issues (or issues that don't concern the Federal government) to break up the formation of any possible other coalition.
I don't for one second believe that 90-10 split.

“A Democrat cancelling a GOP convention”

The GOP knows how RATs are. They made a deal with the devil and now are paying the price. Don’t deal with the snake.

That’s the Texas state convention. Only two Senators are likely to go to that.

Oh really? And which two Senators are the only ones likely to go? Cornyn? Cruz? What about Bryan Hughes, Bob Hall, Robert Nichols, Brandon Creighton, Charles Schwertner, Paul Bettencourt, Angela Paxton, Kelly Hancock, Larry Taylor, Jane Nelson, Joan Huffman, Lois Kolkhorst, Pete Flores, Brian Birdwell, Dr. Dawn Buckingham, Donna Campbell, Charles Perry, Pat Fallon, or Kel Seliger?

Which is funny, because Denton was also one of the few counties to try to ban fracking within the county limits. (Or might have been just the city, I forget.)

It seems to me that Trump could have threaded the needle by being pro-mask and anti-lockdown. By being anti-mask and anti-lockdown, he has created a huge political opening for the Democrats.

Laura Ingraham just had TX LT Gov Dan Patrick on, talking about this, and the leftist push to steamroll school openings, this fall.

Patrick said it was disgusting how Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner had weeks to cancel this convention, but, played total politics by canceling it at THE LAST MINUTE!

Turner never criticized the riots/protests that caused the spike in China Flu, yet he cancels the state GOP Convention.

Patrick said the convention WILL happen, whether in person or online.

This is where our delegates are chosen, for November convention.
