Washington owner Dan Snyder announces team will review nickname

In a move that was long past due, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder announced Friday the team will undergo a “thorough review of the team’s name.”

The team said it has been discussing internally a name change with the league in recent weeks.

Snyder said in a statement:

“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community is proud to represent on and off the field.”

Head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement it was an “issue of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military.”

In a separate statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the discussions and said, “We are supportive of this important step.”

The announcement comes after weeks of pressure for the team to change it.

Two of the team’s biggest financial partners signaled they wanted a name change. FedEx, which owns the naming rights to the team’s stadium, recently revealed it informed the team it wanted to see a new name at FedEx Field. Nike, the league’s official uniform supplier, did more showing than telling when it wiped the team’s products from its online store.

Federals was the name of DC’s USFL team.

No doubt where my aging brain retrieved it.

PETA of all groups had the best idea the last time this came up. Keep the name but change the symbol to a bowl of red-skinned potatoes.

On the Redskins’ name, it’s corporate America and the liberal media against Native Americans

Would you be surprised if multinational corporations and wealthy, powerful, mostly white commentators in New York and D.C. got their way over the will of Native Americans on an issue that is mostly about Native Americans?

I wouldn’t be. In other words, I won’t be surprised if our wokeness-obsessed corporate titans combine with our ever-leftward-lurching media to strip the Washington Redskins of their name — despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of Native Americans are not offended by it.

FedEx, the named sponsor of the stadium where the Redskins play, demanded that the team change its name. Nike won’t sell Redskins gear from its team store. Pepsi is on the game too. And the major media are cheering this all on.

This is a good time to remind the world that Native Americans largely disagree with corporate America and the elite media on this issue. The most thorough poll of Native American sentiment in the past decade found that 90% of Native Americans didn’t find the team name racist. Only 9% found it offensive.

I’ll guarantee you that Dan Snyder is looking at this strictly from a net revenue standpoint. If he changed the name, what would it mean to the short vs. long term income stream and net franchise worth? If he agrees, he’ll squeeze a lot of blood out of the NFL front office to do it. That’s what Snyder is: a businessman, and the Redskins are a business. Or in his case, some poor litle rich kid’s lifelong fantasy toy, and his meddlings in how it works has made it into the laughing stock it is today. And the greedy SOB will make he fans ultimately pay for it at the ticket booth. If he’s the fan he says he is, he’ll tell Goodell to go pound sand and weather out the consequences. In a few years, the SJW mob will be looking for another piece of skin, anyway.
