Rhode Island considers name change due to slavery connotations

What’s in a name? For the state of Rhode Island, years of acrimony over an official designation with connotations of slavery.

But change is brewing in the union’s smallest state, as Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday taking the "first steps" to change the state’s full name: "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."

The "plantations" part of the name has come under increased scrutiny following widespread protests after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Thre are a growing number of old Democrats, remaining silent to avoid assault, who on Election Day will vote Trump or not vote. I think the Novo Communistas are in for a rude sueprise. If we can stop ballot harvesting, with ultimate procedures if necessary, there will be a historic landslide

Plantation meant settlement at the time, it had NOTHING to do with slavery. Boy, these people know absolutely nothing.

The term "plantation" was used in the 17th century as a synonym for "settlement" or "colony."

As in the "Plantation of Ireland," the English government's policy of confiscating land in Ireland from native owners and then "planting" them with settlers from England and Scotland, beginning early in the seventeenth century. No blacks were involved in this "plantation" policy.

If we are going to shuffle the deck, combine the urban areas of New England into a corrupt, woke and broke leftist archipelago.

Separate them from the rest of New England.

There is an island named Rhode Island in the bay if I recall my geography correctly.

The vast majority of the State of Rhode Island is on the mainland and not part of that one small island that’s called Rhode Island. Yet the entire state is named after that one small piece of it, and the vast majority of the state is not an island. Do we need to fix that alleged problem as well as long as we’re changing the name?

It’s awfully coincidental that the 1619 Project was unleashed last year and now we have this race war/civil war (which is serving as a proxy war for Iran and possibly other ME countries and China - in other words a foreign invasion* using homegrown terrorists as foot soldiers.) They are tearing down statues in public squares and other images of American history, changing names of American institutions, states and cities all under a convenient pretext. They are forcing us into useless masks which are nothing but training burkas, priming us to submit to whomever happens to be ruling us at the moment. For now, it’s the CDC and Democrat governors. They have striped law-abiding citizens of several Constitutional rights already, calling us lawless, while almost celebrating real lawlessness and calling THAT Constitutionally protected.

The brainwashing has been on-going for generations over decades but the narrative turned a corner with the 1619 Project and I’m beginning to think it was all in preparation for this. The take down of America. The UN blue helmets will be in here next to put down the “rebellion” or whatever they will call it. They will fold us into a global government. Europe is facing the same insurrection. Americans are being distracted with all kinds of shiny objects: BLM/All Lives Matter discourse; “racist police” discourse and what to do about it; the riots and aftermath; the election, and all of it is dividing us. No one’s paying attention to evidence adding up to what could be a planned invasion* aided by fifth columns, various useful idiots from the foot soldiers, to the media, to the never Trumper celebs, politicians and everyday people. Instead of just reacting to each new atrocity, we need to be asking “Why is this happening?” and looking for answers.

After the smallest state drops the “Providence Plantations” part of its legal name, it should also drop the “Rhode” part due to the enduring connection of that name with the exploitation of Africans.

Cecil Rhodes has as much to do with Rhode Island history as slavery did with the founding of Providence Plantations.

BROWN must change its name and tear down its statues.

Progressive graduates of both Brown and Yale would burn their diplomas in shame but for the sense of superiority that the certifications of those racialist institutions provide. They should also quit donating to institutions that were founded by racists and slave traders.

Is Rhode Island named for the island of Rhodes? The origin of the name seems to be disputed. Ancient Rhodes had slaves...probably still had slaves until the end of the Turkish era. Anyway, to be on the safe side, they need to change the name.

Which native tribe should be honored? Narragansett, Niantic, Nipmuc or Wampanoag? Maybe do a poll and pick whichever name people would have the hardest time spelling.

Maine is big enough to stand on their own. And I still think there is hope for them.

If we include Maine with the others, that makes them too big.
