Washington(CNN)Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is on shaky ground with the White House after saying Wednesday that he does not support using active duty troops to quell the large-scale protests across the United States triggered by the death of George Floyd and those forces should only be used in a law enforcement role as a last resort. Speaking from the Pentagon briefing room podium, Esper noted that "we are not in one of those situations now,"...Wednesday's press briefing by Esper went over poorly at the White House, where his standing was already viewed to be tenuous, multiple people familiar with the matter said.

I wonder if, like Mayor Garcetti in LA, if he would be more willing to discuss the matter when his neighborhood is under assault?

It’s good to see Trump getting his team on the same page.

Fire Wray. Today.

I rode my cycle through downtown LA this afternoon. The Guard has City Hall and the criminal courts bldg surrounded by a protective shield. Sheriffs deputies and LAPD too - all looking relatively unconcerned

Phhhht! CNN.
Maybe Trump will just declare Trump law.
He may as well go all in.
Gets bad enough he will, and it will be very welcome.

Esper is out of line. This is not the way to disagree with the boss.

This guy does not understand or respect chain of command. He let the “Roosevelt” captain off after the Sec. Navy had released him and fired Sec. Navy. All wrong. He was wrong then and he is wrong now.

He and Mattress should get along well.

Do you really want to have some prick like Obama use this precedent against the American people?

I would much rather the American people fight against this insurgency in the streets before bringing in the military. We are in very dangerous times.

Only if under the leadership of the sheriff... there has to be some organized regulated/accountable militia or things will go ever more sideways when some undisciplined zealots get out of hand and escalate matters.

Yep. He can say what he wants behind closed doors in his role as an advisor. If the CinC decided to implement the Insurrection Act, and he was still deeply opposed, he should resign. But Trump has NOT implemented the Insurrection Act. His statement was unacceptable and insubordinate. He should be fired.

We'll have to fight the military too. America is lost. Dangerous times isn't even strong enough to describe what this is.

Mark Esper’s job is to take *orders* from the president. He serves at the president’s pleasure. He better be mindful of that.

Did any of these military leaders object to what Obama was doing with the military? From the deadly (to our guys) rules of engagement, pushing homosexuality in the military, funding Iran, etc.
