HOUSTON, Texas -- The chief of Houston police had some direct words for President Donald Trump who threatened to deploy the U.S. military to American cities if governors don't toughen up and quell violent protests.
It's his latest warning amid violent protests after George Floyd's death in Minneapolis police custody.
"You've got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you'll never see this stuff again," said Trump. "We're doing it in Washington, D.C. We're going to do something that people haven't seen before."
During an interview with CNN Monday night, Chief Art Acevedo responded to those statements.
"Let me just say this to the President of the United States on behalf of the police chiefs in this country, please, if you don't have something constructive to say, keep your mouth shut," Acevedo said. "Because you're putting men and women in their early 20s at risk. Its not about dominating, it's about winning hearts and minds."
"We don't want people to confuse kindness with weakness, but we don't want ignorance to ruin what we have here in Houston," Acevedo continued. "It's time to be presidential, not like you're on The Apprentice. This is not Hollywood. This is real life, and real lives are at risk."

Yes, Trump should shut his mouth and keep his twitter finger off the keyboard.
He issued his statement Monday night. Silence should be the order of the day, then deployment as needed. Trump needs to stop telegraphing the mob, stop gas-lighting them. He might believe he is warning peaceful protesters, he is not. The tactic is backfiring.
We complained because Obama/democrats always were telegraphing our military moves. Well, Trump needs to shut his big yapper at the moment.
The police chief is right, but for the wrong reasons.
“Let me just say this to the President of the United States on behalf of the police chiefs in this country, please, if you don’t have something constructive to say, keep your mouth shut,” Acevedo said. “Because you’re putting men and women in their early 20s at risk. Its not about dominating, it’s about winning hearts and minds.”
If you think those rioters give two shits about what POTUS is tweeting you need your head checked. They keep going because they’re being allowed by locals to get away with it.
If you ain’t reading the backstory on other platforms you have no idea what’s up. He needs to shut his big mouth at the moment. These instigators are spoon feeding them this crap sandwich and sadly none of them have taken a breath to get some fresh air or perspective.
After a pleasant beating.
What other platforms? Facebook and twitter? Oh look another ‘concerned’ poster over something POTUS tweeted.
Is there anything Trump can do that won’t be lied about and twisted?
Why even play with their rules.
This chief is a huge disappointment.
Gadfly über ambitious prick. Lots of “chiefs” like that. The ex-Dallas chief just got the job in Chicago in time to totally bollix the riots.
Chief Art Acevedo... Another California refugee looking to make Texas just like the crap hole that he came from..
Leftists tend to be so arrogant. This guy is just another Neville Chamberlain at best.
Thanks. Figured as much.
Poor Houston.
Whose side are you on?
This police chief Acevedo services himself and his Democrat bosses.
These 'protesters' have neither.
“it’s about winning hearts and minds.”
That worked so well in Vietnam. Maybe if our stupid politicians would have taken the gloves off our military we could have won that one.
Acvedo likes the Vietnam War model.
Acvedo is not “out there”. Polied Chiefs are political appointed positions.
Im sorry, more what than we know about what?
