DC Riots and Bishop Mariann Budde’s Selective Episcopal Outrage

Episcopal Diocese of Washington Bishop Mariann Budde has worked her way into a froth over a photo opportunity by President Trump. Lafayette Square across from the White House was cleared Monday evening of Black Lives Matter protesters (with the use of either tear gas or smoke canisters, depending on which report you read) seemingly for the purpose of facilitating Trump’s walk to St. John’s Episcopal Church for the photo op. Reports from the Washington Post describe Trump briefly standing in front of the church with Bible in hand, but neither entering the building nor speaking with anyone nor opening the Bible, which apparently signaled something at merely being raised like a talisman. “I am outraged,” Budde told the Post about Trump’s posturing in an interview a short time later, pausing between words to emphasize her anger as her voice slightly trembled. She had nothing critical to say about the burning of one of her churches, which according to the parish vestry incurred about $20,000 in damages, mostly to the church nursery.

The Post report noted both Budde and Curry “are among the pantheon of progressive religious leaders who have long been critical of Trump’s political agenda.” I was last present in the now-damaged St. John’s parish house as it hosted a press conference for the Religious Coalition on Reproductive Choice, a progressive lobby that voices approval from religious officials for unrestricted abortion-on-demand, and which counts the Episcopal Church as a member.

Post religion reporters Michelle Boorstein and Sarah Pulliam Bailey cite data from the Pew Research Center showing 49 percent of Episcopalians are Democrats or lean Democratic, compared with 39 percent of church members who are Republican or lean Republican.

Episcopalians have increasingly found themselves in roles difficult to maintain. Church officials simultaneously embrace leftist causes, while also serving as a boutique chaplaincy to the affluent and as presiders over American civil religion in events of national importance including state funerals.

For his part, President Trump is in close proximity to the Episcopal Church: his youngest son was baptized at an Episcopal parish and attends a private Episcopal high school (Trump himself is Presbyterian and his wife Melania is Roman Catholic). The Trump family typically attends services at Bethesda-by-the-sea Episcopal Church when in Palm Beach, Florida, minutes from Mar-a-Lago.

Budde draws a distinction between those engaged in peaceful protest, opportunistic looters and violent organized provocateurs like Antifa. Would she do the same if the partisan affiliations were flipped?

The danger of selective outrage is in exposing one’s self as another partisan instead of acting like a senior shepherd.

The United States Park Police issued a statement about the events in Lafayette Park over the weekend, including about the charge that officers used tear gas against peaceful protesters to clear the area so that President Donald Trump could visit the historic St. John’s Church, which was targeted by protestors.
The United States Park Police (USPP) is committed to the peaceful expression of First Amendment rights. However, this past weekend’s demonstrations at Lafayette Park and across the National Mall included activities that were not part of a peaceful protest, which resulted in injuries to USPP officers in the line of duty, the destruction of public property and the defacing of memorials and monuments. During four days of demonstrations, 51 members of the USPP were injured; of those, 11 were transported to the hospital and released and three were admitted.

Multiple agencies assisted the USPP in responding to and quelling the acts of destruction and violence over the course of the weekend in order to protect citizens and property.

On Monday, June 1, the USPP worked with the United States Secret Service to have temporary fencing installed inside Lafayette Park. At approximately 6:33 pm, violent protestors on H Street NW began throwing projectiles including bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids. The protestors also climbed onto a historic building at the north end of Lafayette Park that was destroyed by arson days prior. Intelligence had revealed calls for violence against the police, and officers found caches of glass bottles, baseball bats and metal poles hidden along the street.

To curtail the violence that was underway, the USPP, following established policy, issued three warnings over a loudspeaker to alert demonstrators on H Street to evacuate the area. Horse mounted patrol, Civil Disturbance Units and additional personnel were used to clear the area. As many of the protestors became more combative, continued to throw projectiles, and attempted to grab officers’ weapons, officers then employed the use of smoke canisters and pepper balls. No tear gas was used by USPP officers or other assisting law enforcement partners to close the area at Lafayette Park. Subsequently, the fence was installed.

Throughout the demonstrations, the USPP has not made any arrests. The USPP will always support peaceful assembly but cannot tolerate violence to citizens or officers or damage to our nation’s resources that we are entrusted to protect.

Tim Murtaugh, Trump 2020 presidential campaign communications director also issued a statement on the tear gas claim:

It’s said that a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can get its pants on. This tear gas lie is proof of that. For nearly an entire day, the whole of the press corps frantically reported the ‘news’ of a tear gas attack on ‘peaceful’ protestors in Lafayette Park, with no evidence to support such claims. We now know through the U.S. Park Police that neither they, nor any of their law enforcement partners, used tear gas to quell rising violence. We also know that police discovered stashes of weapons like glass bottles, baseball bats, and metal poles hidden nearby, which are indeed strange items to have on hand for a ‘peaceful’ protest. Every news organization which reported the tear gas lie should immediately correct or retract its erroneous reporting.

In August of 2001 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) estabalished a "Full Communion Partnership" with The Episcopal Church through the adoption of "Called to Common Mission".

Therefore:

Fine, next time let the church burn to the ground, and let the “bishop” and her wife burn with it.

Dear Bishop Mariann. That’s not your church. That church belongs to the Savior.

She is a Pelosi wanna-bee. Maybe she will now be invited to the DNC convention to speak or to pray.

ELCA is no longer a church.

It is a socio-political organization whose mission is to convert nations to atheistic Communism.

I noticed that her middle name is “Edgar”. Does anyone know if she is related to a very radical clergyman named Edgar, possibly with the National Council of Churches in the 1970’s?

I can’t find my files on radical clergy right now, but I think his title was “The Right Rev.”

I’ll take Wally Cox for $1,000, Alex. He was funny in a nice way.

Ms. Budde looks like a New Mexico modified flag with a rainbow for Gozer worshippers. And that thing she is holding looks like a silver-plated Chameleon tail. Somebody call PETA, quickly.

The irrational and hysterical response by the Bishop suggests to me that she is worried about her donors. Instead of being grateful after a close call that could have destroyed her church, that she had the attention of the President of the United States, she goes crazy. What is she afraid of?

Did the insurrectionists get to her? There was an orchestrated assault on the White House that resulted in injuries to 50 Secret Service agents. Do you remember anything in the history of the USA where 50 agents were injured in one incident?

This was a serious assault by well funded forces. How many terrorists were imbedded in the crowd of "peaceful protestors?"

Her reaction was certainly strange. I think she’s a hardcore leftist.

“At the height of her sermon, Budde broke loose with one of her characteristic flights-of-fancy. “And so, back in 2003, when a Lutheran pastor whom I deeply admired wondered aloud why the Episcopal Church insisted on taking so controversial a position on the full inclusion of gays and lesbians at the very time we needed to grow our congregations, I said to him, ‘You don’t understand.

The full inclusion of lesbians and gays wasn’t something we thought up on our own. God led us to this place. It has not been an easy road. And some day you will thank us because we are making it easier for you to do the same. This is our treasure. This is our treasure.’” She continued with the autosuggestion mantra, “We are a unique expression of God’s creative genius. Never doubt the importance of what you are doing and what we are doing on this earth.”

The Bible of course never sees homosexuality as our treasure and also never states that we are a unique expression of God’s creative genius. Yet Budde proclaims these New Age words in the name of Christ. Budde denies the guidance of Christian scriptures and doctrine in her pronouncement but only uses the name of Jesus as a rhetorical device to sway people’s thinking and actions.”
