Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson extends downtown curfew to Monday to clean up damage caused during George Floyd-inspired protests

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland officials extended a curfew imposed after Saturday’s tense downtown demonstrations to give workers a chance to clean up the damage done to storefronts and government property.

Mayor Frank Jackson, speaking early Sunday morning on Facebook Live, said the curfew, which is currently in effect and set to expire at 8 a.m. Sunday, will begin again at noon and remain in effect until 8 a.m. Monday. Vehicles and pedestrians will not be allowed to enter or travel through downtown.

Officials provided for limited exceptions for cleanup and those who live and work downtown. However, they encouraged those who live and work in the area to also stay home.

(You can watch the video at the bottom of this story.)

The curfew is not city-wide but rather intended to give city employees time to perform cleanup and board-up work downtown, the mayor said. He added that the city will work with the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and coordinate with businesses damaged and looted during the riots.

Police Chief Calvin Williams, who joined the mayor on the broadcast along with Ohio National Guard Lt. Col. Thomas Butler, also indicated that officers would be out in “in force” to try and prevent a repeat of Saturday’s events.

“I encourage folks, stay home tomorrow,” the chief implored. “Stay with your families. Stay with your loved ones. And let us take care of the rest of the city so we can get through this.”

Wouldn’t it be more effective to arrest the rioters and have them sentenced to cleaning up after themselves? Their length of community service could be extended to whenever they have cleaned everything up. And fine them an amount equal to the Nancy Pelosi bonus unemployment they are receiving while they are cleaning up their mess.

I went outside to water my plants. When I came back inside, Geraldo (who lives in Cleveland now) was on Fox News saying, he had spoken to contacts in Cleveland Police Department who told him that 5 of the first 6 ppl in Cleveland arrested were from OUT OF TOWN. This rings true to me b/c when I went to bed Friday night/Sat morning, there were NO violent incidents, not even a candlelight ceremony on Cleveland.com. This all changed Saturday night when the rent-a-mob showed up. Geraldo talked about how the city had tried to hard to implement policies to encourage ppl to move back downtown, and they had been doing so —— and now this. He is right. Geraldo might be a new resident of Cleveland, but he’s a quick study.

Mayor Jackson has done a pretty good job all in all, even though he is a democrat. Cleveland has been seeing a serious renewal, little in the way of racial friction.

You are correct.

Cleveland has a history of electing somewhat conservative Democrats for mayor, except for that dingbat Jane Campbell. Mayors in the model of Mike White, kinda.

Part of it is due to the fact that Cleveland doesn’t have any Jesse Jackson, Louis Farakkhan (sp) types there to stir up things.

Another part is b/c Clevelanders remember the Hough riots. Hough is a place perfectly positioned (close to the lake, close to downtown) to be prosperous and desirable. But it never ever recovered from the riots. To the best of my knowledge, the only improvement made in Hough in the last 60 years, is the restoration of League Park. Which was Fannie Lewis’ goal in life.

He was on WTAM last night about 10pm. He was acknowledging that what is happening has NOTHING to do with George Floyd.

He said it is “much more malevolent and people need to wake-up to what’s really happening.”

Sort of surprised me, but I am hearing more and more folks starting to realize there’s a lot more going on and the fear is getting palpable stuffs about to get very, very hot this summer.

Saw a tweet yesterday calling for kristalnacht. I thought is interestingly funny that a group would call for an event like that...which historically was used by Hitler. It may be why we’re hearing folks on the left saying this was done by white supremacists. I am more prone to think they were/are agitprop actors and provocateurs.

I am beginning to have a very real concern that Trump’s opponent won’t be Biden. And even if Trump does win, his second term is going to be riddled with events like we are seeing now...but much more overt.

Trump’s in trouble...we are in trouble and we’ve got to find a way to help stop this evil. How many of the protesters in DC were there over George Floyd verses ‘hate for the orange man.’ Seriously, think about the black community and all the jobs created etc. in the last 3 years. Many were and likely still are going to vote for Trump.

I’ll go back and listen to Mayor Jackson. I didn’t know he was interviewed.

I found Polensek’s remarks chilling when he described the young white males, dressed for trouble... gas masks, backpacks, all in either black clothing or military style fatigues. No idea how they got there and how they arrived 7 or 8 at a time, and kept coming. To a peaceful prayer service.

If you haven’t listened to it, please do.
