We and our allies need to keep a major naval presence.

I have to wonder what their ROEs are. Back in 2001, Wrong Way smacked into the the EP-3, forcing it to land. What would a Navy ship on the wrong end of an AShM launch be permitted to do other than activate its anti-missile systems, and put some distance between itself and the source of the ordnance?

The news of China's aggression just keeps on coming.
Wuhan, Himalayan border with India, Hong Kong, threats to Taiwan, the South China Sea.
China is probing/behaving like it is trying to force military action by the U.S.

Having been on several Freedom of Navigation exercises, I can assure everyone here this ship did not deviate from its planned course.
And was most certainly not “expelled”.
But Newsweek seems to have an affinity for the Chinese characterization.

China is going more and more kinetic.... it seems to be a redo of when Hitler first attacked the West and then found the Soviets smiling and watching to be threatening as he found himself caught in the momentum, and so attacked the Soviets by surprise.

"Chased off" and "expelled" is Newsweek's and China's characterization of it. Allowing the enemies of America to frame the context of any situation or encounter is weak-minded and effeminate.
I'm not an expert on Naval strategy, but I suspect the movement and response of the US warship was a "testing of the waters' probing both the response and the capabilities of the Chinese. I think it accomplished the mission it went in there to do.

In the 1930s, Japan built runways on islands in the SW Pacific. (Islands lost by Germany through WWI reparations).
Nothing bad happened for years.

waiting for the Filipino Navy to step up. OK where are the sarcasm marks?
Serious question: do the Vietnamese and Filipinos have navies?
