We had a 7hp Evinrude for our little Penn Yan. So fun!! We had to put mom on the end of the boat to balance it.

How much you want to bet that Evinrude can’t compete with Communist Chinese competitors?

Can’t compete with Yamaha and Suzuki. I haven’t seen an Evinrude motor in years.

I agree! They always tried to sponsor my outdoor tv series on NBC Sports, during the economically horrible B-HO Era. It was always tight for them, but they cared about their customers and community.

Interesting thing is that China’s most purchased and built outboard boat motors, to what I can find, Alibaba, are made in Japan.

They were on the way out before Covid-19, their market share was tiny. Their outboards have a very vocal, but small fan base. They only made two stroke engines when the market had decidedly chosen more modern four strokes. They pushed their two stroke technology into the modern age with fuel injection and various other technologies, but in the end it’s like putting fuel injection and digital gauges in an Edsel, it’s still an Edsel.

Covid-19 was a convenient excuse, they wouldn’t have lasted much longer even without the pandemic.

Yep, Yamaha has come to dominate this market, and not without some justification.

translation: They were going to shut-down anyway, but by citing coronavirus as the reason they are giving their laid-off employees access to the sweetened unemployment benefits.

Occam’s Razor.

I have 2 four strokes. One is a Mercury and the other a Tohatsu. The Tohatsu is a 3.5 and I think the Mercury is a 4. Both run our dingheys great. But my fav motor I use for just around the harbor is a cheap electric motor I bought off Walmart.com. Sooooo easy and the kids can use it.

The late 90’s “Ficht” debacle put them on the road to death. They had powerheads blowing up with a huge financial hit to warranty them. Then you had the Bombardier takeover that finished them off.

Evinrude had merged with Johnson (of “big Johnson” fame) and were made by Bombardier in Canada. Bombardier makes jets and trains and are trying to divest; in this market they will go broke.
