AOC-led push to kill Amazon's NYC move under renewed scrutiny as city faces catastrophic job losses

s New York City suffers an economic crisis on top of the coronavirus pandemic, some are looking back with regrets at the left-wing campaign that forced Amazon to scupper a plan to bring tens of thousands of jobs to the area – arguing this project could have helped the Big Apple weather the storm.

“At this time when coronavirus is ravaging incomes across New York, wouldn’t it be nice if the city and state at least knew that one of the world’s largest companies, one of the rare concerns positioned to thrive through the crisis, had made a long-term commitment to locate between 25,000 and 40,000 high-paying jobs here?” an editorial in the New York Daily News said.

The criticism from the local paper this month comes amid estimates from the city’s Independent Budget Office that New York City could lose 475,000 jobs by next March and see a $9.7 billion decrease in tax revenue over the next two years, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Amazon had planned to build a second NYC headquarters in Long Island City in Queens, but community activists and left-wing lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY., and state senators rallied to block the move in 2019. In particular, they had zeroed in on the estimated $2.5 billion in incentives that Amazon would receive in order to tempt them to the area.

"Now what I DON’T want is for our public funds to be funding freebie helipads for Amazon + robber baron billionaires," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted at the time, "all while NYCHA and public schools go underfunded & mom+pops get nowhere near that kind of a break."

AOC understands her constituents, they don't need no stinkin jobs. They don't need to pay taxes. Let the volunteers who answered Gov. Cuomo's call for help pay those usurious tax rates. They need unemployment/funemployment for as long as the dems can get it for them. From the other 40 states.

Hey, at least no one from her district — or from downstate NY in general — is being "exploited" by Amazon for "profit."

Why doesn’t New York just Tax Unemployment Benefits and Welfare Benefits to make up for the loss, there are plenty of New People to TAX in these programs.

Not only that but Amazon is likely to DOUBLE its present size over the next year or two. Scared old ladies who didn’t even know what an internet was are going to be staying locked inside and ordering everything to their house from Amazon from denture cleaners to yarn supplies.

People in New York State do have to pay taxes on their unemployment earnings.

Did the linked story point out the stunning stupidity of AOC describing tax relief as if it were cash payments to Amazon? But of course her idiot fawning supporters think like that. Journalists are clueless as well.

“ Yeah ! Now since we ran Amazon out of town we have all kinds of extra money to spend that we almost gave them in tax relief. let’s see. Where do we want to spend that now!”

Try again.

I know people who live where the HQ was going to be built. The anti-gentrification crowd in no way wanted it there for fear their property values and property taxes would go up!

We had a similar situation in NC in southern Raleigh a few years ago. Wegmans wanted to open a store in a low income area who's only supermarket had closed. Community Organizers fought against it claiming it would raise property values, they eventually won.

This is the world we are living in!

To who? No GOP candidates stand a chance, I think AOC's district Repub. candidate just dropped out. It will have to come from the left. I would love this to be correct, but I have my doubts being these two POS are entrenched in districts with a lots of lovers for POS.

As Hank Thompson might say: All those New Yorkers moving South might tip the country over.
