Can anyone explain why Hong Kong was given to the Chinese in the first place?

Because the 99 year lease ran out.

In formal terms the answer lies in the second Convention of Peking, signed on 9 June 1898. The ailing Qing Dynasty leased the New Territories to Britain for 99 years, starting 1 July 1898. The new additions were to make up 90 per cent of Hong Kong's land mass. The term of 99 years was fixed almost casually.

"once totalitarianism is established, its almost impossible to dislodge..."

Although I agree with your premise, we also need to remember that the USSR, with all its nation-states, nukes, and totalitarian control, did fall.

So China’s about to break another promise they’ve made to the world? I guess it must be asked “who’s gonna stop ‘em?

The British had a 99 year lease on part of what's now called "Hong Kong" (can't recall the exact details) that expired in 1997.Britain decided that the easiest way to deal with the situation was to just hand it over to the ChiComs rather than make any kind of fuss.

And BTW,Portugal had a similar arrangement in Macau, which is a short boat ride from Hong Kong. That lease expired in 1999.

To do anything but hand them over would have been stupid...China would have just rolled the tanks in if Britain and Portugal hadn't done so.

Well, you mean other than the fact that neither Great Britain or the U.S. wanted to fight a land war against China in China over Hong Kong . . . no, can’t think of any reason in the world.

Gosharooti! Hitler was only supposed to annex the Sudetenland. Why are his troops surging across the border into Czechoslovakia? Could it be he took us for chumps again? How astute. I say, let’s do draw a line with Poland, sha’n’t we?

A Sad Day For Democracy: Tomorrow Could Be The End Of Hong Kong As We Know It

Hong Kong ended on 1 July 1997.

What happens there is an internal affair of China unless the UK is prepared to go to war over it - which I doubt.

Hong Kong has always been part of China.

The port was leased to the United Kingdom for 99 years in 1898.

The lease ran out.

Any word yet from the United Nations?

Don't make me laugh.

The "handover", like the original lease, was a bilateral agreement between two sovereign nations.

It has nothing to do with the United Nations, which as a practical matter is defunct. It most especially has nothing to do with the United States.

The people should be evacuated and leave them with an empty city

Nobody wants them.

What Dr Fauci did to the US economy, the PRC will do to HK, just by different and more brutal means.

Good way to weasel around confronting Red China head-on about their violations of human rights, political agreements, territorial provocations/aggression, and war-posturing against smaller, non-nuclear armed nations.

If China is willing to go to war (probable) and we are not (certain) then they are in control of events.

They figured Trump would be gone by now but they can wait until the next Democrat “impeachment” ploy to aid them in weakening the president’s resistance to their aggression

If you think Donald Trump or any US President would go to war with China over Taiwan you are out of your mind.

Has UK even issued a statement on this ChiCom takeover of HK?

Why would they talk against their masters.

UK politicians on both sides are bought and paid for by china.

That's why they stood against USA (their stupid sugar daddy) in case of Huawei 5G.

It’s none of my business - but I suspect you are wasting your breath.

Anyone that quick with an undeserved personal insult is probably not going to suddenly switch gears and be civil.

The two are mutually exclusive.

I’m not a psychologist, but I believe it is the inability to articulate a reasoned response that causes some people to resort to calling others “ignorant”.

As I read the article, there was no mention of what the people in the Pearl River Delta and Shanghai want.

Xi and the CCP may be lighting the fuse on an explosive Chinese powder keg. Cynics will say they have no say. I will argue that an encroachment on the limited fresh air of liberty now available will not be tolerated.

Like I’ve said...... how ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm after they’ve got daisey maes?

The ‘Red Menace’ remains just that.

It has shored up its offensive might and uses the media and collaborators therein to advance its goals.

Cold, hard facts.
