Germany has made public burning of the EU flag or that of another country punishable by up to three years in jail, classing it as a hate crime.

The vote in the Bundestag (parliament) on Thursday makes defiling foreign flags equal to the crime of defiling the German flag.

The same applies for the EU anthem, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy theme.

The move followed Social Democrat (SPD) complaints about protesters’ burning of the Israeli flag in Berlin in 2017. …

Okay, so they left their colonies to their indigenous inhabitants. Great.

But when are they going to boot out the indigenous inhabitants who have gone over to colonizing _them???_

Get: video recorder, EU flag, fire place, match.
Ignite and record.

WHAT! How about Springsteen, The Stones, etc. ‘modifying’ the classics?

What if I hum the “Ode . . . .” while I poop in the morning?

Whether or not I have enough TP.

Is this the freedom we fought to give Europe in 1945?

Probation for murder and jail time for flag burning. What if someone burns a flag store down? Off with their heads like in France.

Freedom from the National Socialist Germans in 1945, not the Euro-Socialist Germans of 2020.

And to think, I had hopes for Germany. How times change.

As I've said before, the US should have made Japan, Germany, and Italy protectorates like Guam, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, and US Virgin Islands. What ever happened to the spoils of war? Think of the influence of the USA around the world if we controlled those nations! America would be invincible.

No, we have to give the enemies of America their countries back. Pfft.

Too many leftists in charge back then. They wanted to make the USA itself into a spoil.

Meanwhile, the USSR had no problem openly plundering their spoils.

You seem to be confusing freedom and democracy. The fact that a government is established by popular vote does not mean that such a government cannot be dangerous to freedom. The American Founding Fathers saw this danger so they established a system of checks and balances and adopted the Bill of Rights to protect the people from the government as much as possible.

The purpose of a government is to protect freedom. How the government is constituted is secondary.

Have you read F. A. Hayek? For him and other classical liberal thinkers, it is important what the government does or is allowed to do (=the scope of government), but whether it is a democracy, a monarchy or even a dictatorship is less important.

The freedom of speech seems to be becoming less important in Western Europe by the day. More and more “hate-speech” laws are passed. You can’t criticize a certain religion and call its founder a pedophile. You can’t say that trans-gender people are mentally ill. Now you won’t be able to burn the Chinese flag, even though it represents a despicable totalitarian regime.

Can’t you see where Germany is going?

What is it with the Germans and their perchance to totalitarianism? There is clear a historical trend there.

You ignore that a law can be changed. So your whole check and balance argument is lacking.

As far as Germany goes, there are anti-Nazi laws for good reason.

Then add common sense... burning a flag does not protect anyone from government but can incite violence. There actually are acceptable ways to protest and illegal ways. Making a difference between them in law is actually, you know... what laws are meant for.

As for F. A. Hayek...

In August 1926, Hayek married Helen Berta Maria von Fritsch (1901–1960), a secretary at the civil service office where Hayek worked, on the rebound upon hearing of his cousin's marriage. They had two children together.[168] Upon the close of World War II, Hayek restarted a relationship with his cousin, who had married since they first met, but kept it secret until 1948. Hayek and Fritsch divorced in July 1950 and he married his cousin[169] Helene Bitterlich (1900–1996)[170] just a few weeks later after moving to Arkansas to take advantage of permissive divorce laws.[171] His wife and children were offered settlement and compensation for accepting a divorce. The divorce caused some scandal at LSE where certain academics refused to have anything to do with Hayek.[171] In a 1978 interview to explain his actions, Hayek stated that he was unhappy in his first marriage and as his wife would not grant him a divorce he had to enforce it.[172] He rarely visited his children after the divorce.[173]

Hayek's son, Laurence Hayek (1934 - 2004) was a distinguished microbiologist.[174]

Hayek was brought up in non-religious setting and decided that he was an agnostic from age 15.[175] He died in 1992 in Freiburg, Germany, where he had lived since leaving Chicago in 1961.[176]

Are there more kooks you think I should read from?

What we see Europe as now makes everything America sacrificed for meaningless. Three world wars: WWI,WWII and Cold War fleeced America. Washington warned America about this. I am not isolationist but hate the politicians.

But tossing a German flag, like Merkel did, is perfectly fine.
