April retail sales sank by 16.4 percent to their lowest level on record, as stores and restaurants felt the full weight of a month of coronavirus closures.
The monthly sales data, which measures spending at places such as gas stations, restaurants, bars, and stores, was released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
The number was worse than economists had been anticipating, with most having forecast a 12 percent drop.
By comparison, March sales were down by 8.3 percent, which was at that time the worst decline since records began in 1992.

Obviously, NBC “News” did not get the word that all stores in the US were closed. To fall only this much is great news, if true. But who believes NBC?
Considering virtually every store that isn’t a grocery is closed I frankly expected them to drop a lot more.

Nonstore retailers are included in the total. They rose 8.4%.
Trump should do awa with reporting the numbers until things open back up (a democrat would). Heck I remember when Obama change the way some numbers were reported to make him look better
Some stores that could have reopened here in Florida have not. I’m not sure why. Corporate lawyers I suppose.
W will not have an economy to recover if we don’t open it now in 90% of America.
We have purchased items online but not nearly as much as we would have under normal circumstances in stores and in restaurants.
Economists must live in free states where you can actually go our and buy things. I guess they didn't see it coming.

Fact is POTUS, Trump is politically slaughtering Democrat Joe Biden in just about every primary election thus far. (Idaho & Oregon Primaries are next Tuesday). Or perhaps the business owner has made the individual choice not to because they wish to prioritize slowing the spread of the virus over their profits.
Or perhaps there are not enough people choosing to go out to justify opening.
This is all about freedom, right? So, the business owner has the freedom to choose not to open.
