Security guard fatally shot in Michigan while telling shoppers to wear masks

A Family Dollar store security guard was fatally shot in Flint, Michigan, on Friday after telling a customer her child had to wear a face mask to enter the store, prosecutors said.

An argument began when the security guard, Calvin Munerlyn, 43, told Sharmel Lashe Teague, 45, that customers needed to wear face masks in the store, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said at a Monday news conference. She yelled at him, spit on him and drove off, Leyton said. About 20 minutes later, her car returned to the store and her husband and son, Larry Edward Teague, 44, and Ramonyea Travon Bishop, 23, stepped out and confronted Munerlyn, according to investigators who spoke to witnesses in the store and reviewed surveillance video. Bishop shot him, Leyton said.

Leyton said Munerlyn was doing his job, protecting others and enforcing a statewide executive order. In Michigan, people are required to wear face coverings in businesses. Stores can refuse service to anyone who isn't wearing a mask.

"We simply can't devolve into an 'us versus them' mentality," he said. "We need to make a commitment as a community to do the things necessary to allow us to stay healthy and turn a page on this crisis together. Not for ourselves but for Calvin Munerlyn, who lost his life needlessly and senselessly."

Michigan State Police arrested Sharmel Teague but are searching for the two men, Special 1st Lt. David Kaiser said.

Social media posts by friends and family memorialized Munerlyn, a father of eight children, by his nickname: "Big Duper." A GoFundMe account for the family has raised more than $22,000, exceeding its goal. Latryna Sims Munerlyn, his wife of 10 years, told NBC 25 that he worked at the store for more than a year.

I guess I’m one of those right-wing nuts who think it’s ok for owners to decide how to run their stores. I don’t know the story in this case, but if I were running a chain store (or an airline), I’d require everyone coming in to wear masks, given how effective they’re working in Taiwan and South Korea, versus NYC. I’d also expect conservatives to RESPECT my decision (although obviously the killers weren’t conservatives here).

This isn’t a case of rights and freedom. It is about an idiot that cowardly took a life.

Oh, please. I can say with absolute certainty that none of the people involved in this incident ever attended a protest against a totalitarian government.

Think of the dilemma the propagandists were in,black on black crime down the memory hole versus all things coronavirus out front.

The victims wife’s name is Latryna? How does someone arrive at a name like that? I will now say a prayer for the victim and his family.

If there is an upside to this story it is that the child may be lucky enough to get taken away and put in foster care.

Out of curiosity why is a private civilian security guard trying to enforce a state law? Shouldn’t that guard be a LEO maybe off duty but none the less a official LEO if it is such a dangerous location or job undertaking? The extent of his authority should just be to deny entry non-violently and if met with resistance then back off and call for the police to come and settle the dispute. Sounds like Dollar General may have a ugly expensive situation on its hands when the dust settles.

You might think that. But again, you would be wrong.

I guess I am wrong too. The more I think of the flubros, the more I an convinced that they would not have the guts to talk back to a security guard.

Leyton said Munerlyn was doing his job, protecting others and enforcing a statewide executive order.

Well over to you Whitmer.
Expect more of this garbage if the tyrannical, unconstitutional lockdowns continue.
Not to mention, no less a person than The Surgeon General has come out against face masks. And if you believe them, WHO came out against face masks as well.

There has been a lot of "anger" on this site about masks.
Especially by people who don't want to wear them.

The problem is that it’s not a “state law” at all. It’s some stupid Karen governor’s idea of what constitutes a legitimate executive order.

If a security guard tells me to wear a mask in a store, I will either obey him or I will leave. It has nothing to do with a stupid government edict, and everything to do with the fact that it’s not my property and I don’t do whatever the hell I want there.

But then my name isn’t Latrine, either.

These people are hugging in the pic yet they’re wearing masks?

This is an epic fraud they’ve subjected America to.

Oddly, the “racists and fascists” the Governor Half-witt complained were terrorizing the statehouse didn't shoot anyone.

For that reason there will be no comment for the lefties about this incident. Just doesn't fit that narrative.

Probably rapidly devolved into a “I knows you ain’t gonna be disrespectin me” situation, out came the gun and it was done in seconds.

C’mon, Danny. I know the fear of the virus has you fired up, but please don’t disparage yourself with a comment like this, man. You’re much too fine a contributor to this FR Forum to sink so low. 10-4? Cheers!
