“There’s been a re-engineering of priorities,” said Dror Bikel, who has had seven clients within the last month request to withdraw their divorce filings.
Veteran divorce lawyer Maggie Kaminer said before COVID-19, in two decades she had two couples withdraw their divorce. Now in recent weeks, “I’ve heard from several clients that they want the lawyers to step back and they want to try and resolve the open issues and not litigate.”
Some, like a couple in their 20s, began to mend their fractured two-year marriage after the March 20 shelter-in order.
“They were moving toward divorce, no kids. But they have been spending more time together. She said, ‘I want to reconcile,'” Bikel said.
In another case, an Upper East Side couple in finance — he in private equity and she a bank money manager — “were working really hard and not seeing each other a lot and their relationship broke down. They just weren’t spending time together,” said Bikel, who represented the husband.
But the wife came down with the coronavirus in the beginning of March and the once-distant husband “had to devote himself to taking care of her” and the couple’s two kids, an 11-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl.

What is equivalent is the lower divorce rate we had when there were blue laws and the sharp divorce rise after blue laws were repealed.

Since I was at least fourteen years old, I would tell anyone who would listen that I didn't believe in divorce. I found a drop dead gorgeous girl from the community we grew up in so we had the same small town rural community values. She was a class behind me so I remembered her cute face from the school playground since she started first grade. Both her family and my family had moved away for several years and then moved back to our little community after we were grown.
We actually got together by an odd chance. My brother's college roommate needed to setup a double date so he could go out with a girl that was still in high school. The girl's parents didn't trust a "college man." My brother's roommate asked me if I wanted to go on a blind date with my future wife. He said oh, by the way you may remember her, you went to the same elementary school and showed me her High School Graduation photograph. I asked him how much I had to pay him. That night when I got home from our date, I told my Dad that I would marry that girl.
We were married less than two months later and have been together soon to be 46 years. In our sixties now, she is still the same trophy wife that I married for my first and only time as I often tell her. I little "high maintenance" through the years but well worth it. Divorce is for losers and wimps.
