The US government on Tuesday lifted a ban on making lethal viruses, saying the research is necessary to "develop strategies and effective countermeasures against rapidly evolving pathogens that pose a threat to public health."
Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, made the announcement, in which he outlined a new framework for the controversial research. The work with three viruses can now go forward, but only if a scientific review panel determines that the benefits outweigh the risks. "We have a responsibility to ensure that research with infectious agents is conducted responsibly, and that we consider the potential biosafety and biosecurity risks associated with such research," Collins said in a statement. The decision brings an end to a three-year moratorium on research involving the influenza virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome (known as SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (or MERS). Critics say the research could unleash a new germ that threatens millions if it is not properly stored or if it escapes from a lab. The government paused the research in 2014 to review the practices in handling and storing infectious agents. At the time, Collins said that biosafety and biosecurity risks needed to be "understood better."

“Why the government is creating lethal viruses”
... because they got tired of creating chemtrails?
Why are these dated things posted without any time context. I don’t want to go to cnn to find out the year.
The date it was posted is right under the headline. I also stated it was an old article.
While there was no incentive for the government to create lethal viruses from 1/20/2009 thru 1/20/2017, there is ALL the incentive to create them since 1/21/2017. According to CNN.
“... because they got tired of creating chemtrails?”
Replacing stupid chemistry tricks with stupid virology tricks.
You don’t have to click on the link to find the year—it’s at the top of the page.
I thought Dr. Fauci authorized the 2017 testing of lethal viruses.
We never stopped making lethal viruses. Coronavirus is Made in USA to destroy Trump and Chicom economic power. Who benefits? Dems for sure, but bankster neocons for real.
“I thought Dr. Fauci authorized the 2017 testing of lethal viruses.”
Fauci is head of Nation institute of allergy and infectious diseases so likely could authorize similar studies in his agency. The danger of such studies is easy to understand but the benefits seem rather vague. Virologists seem to have a fetish for going into remote places to find ever deadlier viruses that can infect humans and bringing them back to heavily populated areas for “study”. Without such studies the virus infected bats would rarely come into contact with humans (except those who catch and eat them). If you wanted to prevent a pandemic a better way would be for the Chinese govt to ban the sale, possession and eating of bats.
...because they have been making them all this time but now it is harder to conceal it with any credibility...
How else you gonna learn to fight them? Can’t invent the bullet proof vest until after you invent the bullet.
“How else you gonna learn to fight them? Cant invent the bullet proof vest until after you invent the bullet.”
It doesnt seem that studying random viruses helped us predict or prevent the SARS, MERS and Covid outbreaks. However we did get a head start on a Covid vaccine because if its similarities to those viruses.
Anyone have a link to Fauci being a lowly bureaucrat? (Negative views).
Remember we had 2 dozen patient zeros with SARS (people who came into the country sick) and no patient ones (people who caught it in America). Clearly we did a pretty good job fighting it. And plenty of others. Covid caught us a little hairy but the norm is that these bugs don’t do nearly as much damage in America as the rest of the world. Because we know stuff. And we know that stuff cause we work with these things pretty constantly.
Sure, some lefty dimorat will see it as a wonderful way to depopulate the earth...
its called the Hegelian Dialectic
In its briefest - “Create the Problem” then use the media to “control the reaction” and then step in and offer the “predetermined intended solution”
In academic terms “thesis-antithesis” and “synthesis”

In practical terms for the average Joe- all you need to think about is RICO - Racketeer influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act

Thugs have graduated from cheap suits, city streets and Tommyguns to suites and suits in law firms and foundations that have figured out ways to bilk us all of taxpayer moneys with their nasty little schemes.
Playing with viruses is right up there with the global warming/carbon caper scams etc...
Create the problems, generate the hysteria, step in with the predetermined solutions that of course will cost billions if not trillions to resolve...and oh by the way demands “mass vaccinations” ....

SARS was fought using the principles of epidemiology, isolating patients and tracking contacts. That’s been known for over 100 years. It wasn’t fought using things learned from studying that particular corona virus in the lab prior to the outbreak. There is value in learning about viral biology but it doesnt have to be done with NOVEL extremely virulent human pathogens. Viruses are simple things and what you learn from weak human pathogens or even animal pathogens will be applicable to other Corona viruses. Once a virus has caused an outbreak in humans (like SARS) it SHOULD be studied since it has a higher likelihood of re-emerging.
But you also have to deal with the specifics of the disease. How it transmits, it’s early symptoms. That’s how you isolate people early, reducing their contacts. And also understand that a lot of what we learn playing with known things in the lab is knowledge for its family when one is out in the wild. Stuff we learned about corona in the lab helped us with SARS in the wild.
And it absolutely HAS to be done with novel extremely virulent pathogens. Because those are the biggest threats. And we need as much about those BEFORE they hit as we can. Because even the novel ones ARE members of pathogen families and do share traits. Knowledge is knowledge, you always need more.

Can you name one virus that caused an outbreak that wasnt transmitted through aerosolized droplets from sneezing, coughing or by touching the eyes or surfaces? There are not that many mechanisms for transmission. Likewise there are not that many symptoms. Fever, sneezing, cough, fatigue, vomiting, etc. Anything we learned about the SARS virus in the lab only happened after the outbreak, unless you mean stuff about corona viruses in general.
“And it absolutely HAS to be done with novel extremely virulent pathogens. Because those are the biggest threats. And we need as much about those BEFORE they hit as we can. Because even the novel ones ARE members of pathogen families and do share traits.”
I would argue that the biggest risk is going to remote areas with a very low population density to find virulent viruses to “study” in or near major cities. The probability of an infected bat coming into contact with humans in some remote area is extremely low, unless the humans are there to catch bats for virus studies. An exception is China where they foolishly allow people to catch and sell bats to eat. Hopefully that will be corrected after the Covid fiasco.
As far as needing to learn about the next virus to “hit”, has anyone ever correctly predicted when, where or which virus was going to cause the next outbreak?
