New York health officials were warned in writing that a Brooklyn nursing home where 55 patients have died of coronavirus was overwhelmed — weeks before it began topping the state’s official list of resident COVID-19 deaths, damning emails show.
Cobble Hill Health Center CEO Donny Tuchman sent a desperate email to state Health Department officials on April 9, asking if there was “a way for us to send our suspected covid patients” to the hospital built inside the Javits Convention Center or the US Naval hospital ship Comfort — the under-utilized federal medical facilities on Manhattan’s West Side.
“We don’t have the ability to cohort right now based on staffing and we really want to protect our other patients,” Tuchman wrote in a chain of the emails reviewed by The Post.

At the time Tuchman sent his plea, only 134 of the 1,000 beds at the Javits Center were full and the Comfort — which had just been reconfigured to treat up to 500 COVID-19 patients — had a mere 62 on board.
Adding insult to injury, the Navy hospital ship wound up treating just 179 patients before Gov. Cuomo on Tuesday said it was no longer needed.

At first, Comfort WAS reserved for non-COVID patients.
Then, as expected, COVID reared it’s ugly head aboard the ship.
They then began accepting COVID patients to ease the load, from the *overburdened* NYC hospitals.
I spoke to my niece today who supervises a lab at one of the city hospitals in Rochester, New York. She said her hospital has closed three floors, and has almost 300 empty beds. They’re using the extra staff from the closed floors in ICU, which is where most of the help is needed. She also said that people have been traumatized by the media, and are afraid to even go to the hospital for any kind of treatment for fear they will get the virus. Because of that, even patients who are suffering from Leukemia have been afraid to seek help. The hospital recently admitted 5 Leukemia patients within a short period of time, two of which waited far too long to seek help. One passed, and the second is not expected to live.
He won’t go. The people in NYC love him. He cannot do any wrong.

Thanks for the info. You’d think that they could have sent the residents of the nursing homes who tested positive to the ship, instead of sending them back to the nursing home after being discharged from the hospital. Perhaps it would have prevented more nursing home residents from coming down with the virus, and dying.

The Trump administration changed Medicare regs so that facilities could refuse to take back patients if the situation warranted.
Cuomo overrode that.
I wonder if most of the patients sent back were dual eligble Medicare/Medicaid. That might explain a lot.

What you described is the story at the hospital where my wife works.
They have bunches of empty beds. If you were going to have appendicitis, this is the week to do it. You would get right in. You would get great attention. And the best room in the house.

I’m sure it was. And I’m betting it was the Medicaid patients who paid the price.
Yes, except for the respirator part. They aren't going to put elderly on ventilators because most of them will have directives forbidding intubation. They will put them on oxygen instead. The much more important reason for moving them from the nursing home is so they don't infect everyone else at the nursing home.
It 's the #1 goal of all nursing homes and assisted living facilities right now: find the COVID patients and get them out ASAP.
Early on, all of us watched as all of those seniors died at the Washington State nursing home.
So there is absolutely no excuse for Benito Cuomo NOT to know what could happen with COVID in nursing homes. Especially when there was plenty of room at the Javits Center and the Comfort.

• Effective April 6, USNS COMFORT began accepting trauma, emergency and urgent care patients without regard to their COVID status. The Javits New York Medical Station continues to be DoD’s primary facility for COVID-19 patients.
• The Javits New York Medical Station and USNS Comfort together act as an integrated system working inside the larger New York City medical system, with support provided to New Jersey Hospitals. The ability to take COVID-19 patients on board USNS Comfort provides increased capability to care for high severity COVID-positive cases, allowing the Javits New York Medical Station to focus on lower severity COVID-positive patients.
