Mattis got his stripes in an organization where he was rewarded for killing his enemies. He did well and I commend him for his many successes. In politics, however, it is important to be competent in recognizing and successfully dealing with liars. It’s obvious he doesn’t do as well in that.

The bureaucracy, just like the elected offices, NEEDS to be cleaned out periodically. Otherwise, entrenched, unaccountable, group think, internal cliques and coalitions develop, not to carry out policy as set by the elected government but to shape it to their own views.
