Social distancing may be helpful in slowing the spread of a virus, but it doesnt do a thing in terms of gang violence because six feet is still considered a very short range when aiming a handgun. That may be the lesson coming out of Charm City as the pandemic grinds on. Private businesses and schools may be shut down, but the gang bangers still out there murdering each other with abandon. The body count in Baltimore from gang warfare is still leaving the coronavirus in the dust. (Baltimore Sun)
Since March 23, the city has seen 11 killings in 12 days, with at least 18 more people shot and wounded. That doesnt include a man fatally shot by a police officer. March finished with 18 homicides, a number in line with whats typically been recorded during the month in recent years.
But the overall crime picture remains more complex. Total reported crime in Baltimore has indeed dipped, as have calls to 911, data show. Reported property crime is down considerably: Burglaries, larcenies and auto thefts have fallen each of the past three weeks, and have been cut in half compared with the same period last year.
That is keeping with a trend reported in other cities where stay-at-home orders and general fears about the coronavirus have driven down crime. But Baltimore, like other cities, continues to see gunfire.

Overall crime is probably only down because some acts are not being enforced or reported.
The local news reported this morning that the police department is down 500 personnel from its already understrength number due to the pandemic.
Of course, they will “calm down”. Didn’t the wonderful mayor of Baltimore ask them to do that?
And just why does James Smith wonder at the pandemonium created by street car tracks that terminate in front of a a building? </shelter-in-place-silliness>
Smith = West
Smith = West = Kirk?
Just ask Marilyn Mosby. /eyeroll.
Baltimordor. Firmly ensconced in the Land of Peasant Living.
It’s Baltimore. Rain, snow, hot, cold - nothing stops the shootings.
The gangs don’t care about anything. If they get sick, you and I will be paying for their care.
If the thugs would just limit their killings to one another, then the killings would be a GOOD thing.
a cable car track...
Glad to see that Baltimore again is a national leader in “something, somewhere, somehow”.
Due to so much gunfire, the Baltimore Orioles have been renamed “The Baltimore Deadbirds”. The city symbol is now called “The Duck”. Not the bird, the movement.
Old billboards promoting “Charm City” now have the “C” covered over. Most appropriate.
I grew up there and never heard gunfire. Today, it seems to be “the 4th of July”, 24/7.
