Elmhurst demographics is almost all Asian and Hispanic (lots and lots and lots of illegals):

Not sure how contemporary this is as a political issue.

My grandma started her 55-year career in NYC Public schools in 1911. Until my mom was born, she taught on the Lower East Side.

Of course, it was a different world. Her mission, as she saw it, was creating Americans out of Jews, Italians, Greeks, Irish, etc - but the places her students lived were quite similar to the places described in this article.

By the way, she had 60 students in her classroom, no “aides”, no ESL, no sex positive programs. She used only English (although her family spoke German at home) and taught the 3Rs + patriotism.

When she died in 1985, there were some 70 year olds at her funeral to pay tribute to the teacher who gave them their wonderful lives in America.
